    Bruce Bowen, 2002-2003, 2004-2005, and 2006-2007 S.A. Spurs
Before anyone starts yelling, yes, I understand that Bruce Bowen is a cheap dirty overrated elite defender, but how does that excuse the fact the Bowen does nothing else on the court? It might just be me, but I don't see how a man that has career averages of 6.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.3 AST, and .9 SPG has such a great reputation. (No, that is not a misprint on the steals number. The mighty Bruce Bowen has indeed averaged less than a steal per game for his career, and in fact has never averaged more than 1.4 in any single season.) In the Spurs three championship years Bowen's PERs were 9.1, 9.5, and 7.1.

I love the derision for the lack of steals, as if that's a clear indication of good defense. Very poor showing, winningtheturnoverbattle.blogspot!

I submitted an anonymous response, but since it was vehemently disputing the author's contention that Bowen "does nothing" other than defend, I don't suppose it will be published to the blog.

Bruce is valuable because all the little things he does that the casual fan doesn't see have no way of being tracked as a stat. Popovich is probably the toughest defensive minded coach there is in the NBA. If he didn't notice or appreciate Bruce's impact he would have been gone a long time ago.

Btw, did anyone see in his next post where he says that Bowen is only good defensively because he plays with elite defenders like Tim and, wait for it......Manu. That alone gave me a chuckle, calling manu an elite defender while Bruce's d is overated

Tom "Satch" Sanders was just about as unimpressive in his offensive output over the course of his 13 year career with the Boston Celtics. 9.6 points per game.

Tom was the undersized (215 pounds) starter the Celts put on everyone from Willis Reed to Elgin Baylor to Dave DeBusschere as a defensive stopper. He was durable (like Bowen) having played a stretch of 450 consecutive games. His number 16 hangs from the rafters in Boston following his single-digit career ppg production. Satch has 8 rings.

posey was one of the reasons why the heat won the championship. him and haslem's D made dirk look like a lil girl.

as bill simmons says, in the NBA you can succeed if you do one important aspect of basketball REAL WELL (for the most part)

I guess Bruce's three pointers that were the difference in Game 3 were actually meaningless. Right.

Let's see, who's better at evaluating talent:

    * Greg Popovich: best all-time Finals record, four NBA championship rings, coach of team with best record in all of professional sports over the last decade, or
    * Some anonymous blogger who started with the PER as his primary criteria?

Man, in addition to his defense, which at times was just brilliant, Bruce hit cold blooded shots in big situations this postseason. I couldn't be happier with the way he played.

well, they don't include the stats of the player Bruce is guarding, like points or FG%. And steals are overrated, most of them are gambles and if you don't get them, then your man blows by for an open shot.

Absolutely. Bowen's not a stat filler so you'll never want to have him as a player on your fantasy league team, but in real world situations, he brings intangibles that are essential to being a successful ballclub.

    -Relentless pressure
    -contesting all shots
    -suffocating face-guard defense
    -rugged play
    -hustle
    -intimidation

These things dont show on the stats sheet.
