Short for kilobits per second, a measure of data transfer speed. Modems, for example, are measured in Kbps. Note that one Kbps is 1,000 bits per second, whereas a KB (kilobyte) is 1,024 bytes. Data transfer rates are measured using the decimal meaning of K whereas data storage is measured using the powers-of-2 meaning of K. Technically, kbps should be spelled with a lowercase k to indicate that it is decimal but almost everyone spells it with a capital K.

Mbps stands for millions of bits per second or megabits per second and is a measure of bandwidth (the total information flow over a given time) on a telecommunications medium. Depending on the medium and the transmission method, bandwidth is also sometimes measured in the Kbps (thousands of bits or kilobits per second) range or the Gbps (billions of bits or gigabits per second) range.

A megabit is a million binary pulses, or 1,000,000 (that is, 106) pulses (or "bits"). For example, a U.S. phone company T-carrier system line is said to sustain a data rate of 1.544 megabits per second. Megabits per second is usually shortened to Mbps.

Some sources define a megabit to mean 1,048,576 (that is, 220) bits. Although the bit is a unit of the binary number system, bits in data communications are discrete signal pulses and have historically been counted using the decimal number system. For example, 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps) is 28,800 bits per second. Because of computer architecture and memory address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two.

We got rid of RR and switched to the highest DSL. I have no idea if this is good or not, but honestly, pages load just as fast, if not faster than when we had RR.

I just did a different site and got a download of 1322 and an upload of 628.

Does it depend on the server you're using to test?

those speeds are a lot better than rr. probably costs a pretty penny though, you could run servers on that connect.

yeah you could probably easily run a game server if you wanted as long as there was a 10-12 player limit. might wanna keep that fact away from the teens.

My kids aren't interested in online gaming.

It's not expensive. I think the DSL we have is $40/mo. We did the Dish Network, phone, DSL package through AT&T. We didn't do the cell (we have the NEW AT&T) as that's run through our business. We are paying slightly less than we did for RR and High Def cable with the sports package, DVR, and HBO and our old phone plan. Plus, our cable modem would go down several times a day.

We revamped our phone plan, and with Dish we get ALL the movie channels, plus we have Hi-Def on both TVs and DVR on one. For some reason Dish doesn't have NBDHD, though. But we get the NFL channel!

I may never leave the house.
