Now don't the people who waited in line for two days to spend $600 for the thing feel stupid (if they didn't already)...

Sony drops the price of the PS3
The company knocks $100 off the 60 GB model and introduces a new 80 GB version
Ending weeks of speculation, Sony officially announced a new $499 retail price for their 60 GB Playstation 3 on Sunday, effective immediately. They also introduced a larger 80 GB model at the $599 price point, which will come packaged with the racing game Motorstorm and will be available to North American consumers this August.
"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," explained SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton.
"The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software les this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."
The company also stated that 120 PS3 les are slated to hit shelves before the end of the fiscal year, including third-party heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4.
More information is expected to be announced at this week's E3 2007 expo.

I prefer my 360, my PS3 gathers dust. I'd say there is some buyer's remorse for paying $600 for the damn thing. The only game I've played is Resistance, which is fun online. The other game I bought, Dark Kingdom, I've played once since I bought it some 6 or 7 months ago.![]()
Aka "We are dead last in console sales and are trying to salvage the PS3's future".
Too bad the 360 does the same thing for cheaper and the Wii is significantly cheaper. Plus both have better games at the moment.
The PS3 is in serious trouble IMO they lost the console exclusive Assassins Creed now due out on the 360, they might've had Army of Two as a console exclusive too and lost it (but I can't remember so could just be me being dumb). as the and then this story just came out today which if it happens will be one less reason to buy the PS3

Senior Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue has questioned whether the recent PS3 price cut will have the desired impact on sales. He went on to hint that Metal Gear Solid 4, long expected to be a PS3 exclusive and potential system seller, may also end up on the Xbox 360.
ImageSpeaking to Reuters, Kitaue, head of Konami's North American and European operations, said that the PlayStation 3, even at a reduced price of $499, was still comparatively expensive.
"I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," said Kitaue.
"I don't expect a substantial impact. With $500, you can buy a personal computer."
The PS3 is still double the price of Nintendo’s Wii, currently the fastest selling of the three next generation home consoles, and $100 more expensive than Microsoft’s premium Xbox 360.
Kitaue also indicated that while Konami would like to keep the latest Metal Gear Solid le a PlayStation 3 exclusive, a desire to see a return on large development costs coupled with a smaller than anticipated PS3 user base could see the game headed for Xbox 360 too.
"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," Kitaue said.
If the le does go multiplatform it would be the latest in a long line of once PlayStation only les to do so, and would represent a major blow to the platform holder.
Kitaue also said he expects Konami’s gaming division profit to grow in the next fiscal year in synch with the expansion of the next generation console user base. He went on to target EA’s FIFA soccer crown, claiming that Konami could encroach on the publisher’s share of the North American market by selling more copies of its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise than previously.
Yeah im a xbox guy myself now.
Yeah, PS3 lost, but at least they're Blockbuster compatible.![]()
I'm still going to buy a Wii before I get the PS3. It looks like Blue-Ray might win the format war, so for me the PS3 will be a souped up Blue-Ray player. I wonder if they have stopped or will stop production on the 20 gig version.
Why would they feel stupid, the PS3 came out eight months ago?
"Gee I wish I had waited eight months instead of buying it now so I could get it 100.00 cheaper"
You could pretty much say that about any piece of electronics because pretty much everythin either drops in price or gets upgraded..
Konami would be silly to keep a game like Metal Gear PlayStation exclusive. You'd be cutting out most of the customers willing to buy the game by doing so. Why not shoot for the highest potential sales possible?
Microsoft had said that they wouldn't be against producing an add-on BlueRay player for the 360, like they did with the HD-DVD add-on. Seems Microsoft was smart not putting a next gen player in the system itself.
Historically consoles do not drop price within the first year.
Until this announcement, I cannot say I ever remember something like this happening.
Until its $399 or less, Ill never own one.
Remember NeoGeo? History repeats itself.
More like ...remember 3DO?
That was the first $500 console I remember.
What a massive failure.
actually it was $700![]()
The problem for Sony is game development costs are so high, companies have to port their new games to all the consoles (or at least to the 360) to make their money back.
360 has been out for over a year with no price drop, PS3 is already making a price cut 7 months after its release.
The price drop still won't help them with their lack of software.
The PS3 is a continuing money-losing proposition for Sony. , didn't it single-handedly destroy their quarterly earnings (1st or 2nd I forget)?
Like another poster mentioned, what really drove their phenomenal sales in the last generation were their exclusives: something they can no longer really claim. No matter how they spin it, losing Assassin's Creed was huge. That's been tipped for a while now as the next gen game.
I consider myself a videogame slappy. I buy anything just to try it.
But Im not paying PS3 price for a console that doesnt have any games to actually, you now, play!
I am not a fanboi of any one particular company, but Sony seems to have completely misjudged the market entirely.
Sony is acting like a guy with a flea market booth. If you walk away, he'll lower the price and throw in a few free things.
I still play my PS2, I feel old
at least there's to play on PS2
Me too! I am currently playing NBA2k7 pretty much. I was contemplating buying a PS3. But I wasn't about to stand and wait overnight for no daggone game system. On top of that the only games I normally play are basketball and John Madden football. I played the basketball game NBA 07 they had on display, and it didn't warrant me spending 600 dollars for that. But the thing that topped it off for me was Madden. I like to play the franchise mode on Madden and I heard that they were missing alot of the key features in the franchise mode setting. And also not to mention all the negative reviews I keep hearing about the thing. I will have to see how all the new fall games look for the PS3 before I consider buying one. But for now I'm completly happy with my PS2.
