Udrih is better than most of the nba third string PGs.![]()
It's accepted wisdom that a team should have 3 PG's on its roster.
06/07 - Parker, Vaughn, Beno
05/06 - Parker, Van Exel, Beno
04/05 - Parker, Beno, Wilks/Barry
03/04 - Parker, Hart, Ward
02/03 - Parker, Claxton, Kerr
Currently, for 07/08 we have
Parker - Good
Vaughn - acceptable 2nd option
Beno - Ugly....
We also have a very limited roster crisis. I personally would urge the addition of a big SF or SF/PF tweener, but currently, we have no roster spot, assuming we sign our 2007 2nd round pick, Marcus Williams.
How comfortable would people on this forum feel with trading Beno for a trade exemption (say to cleveland) and maybe a 2nd round player. The 3ed PG spot would be filled by committee from our current roster - Barry/Ginobili/Marcus Williams as 3ed string PG? (Williams did play some PG in college). This would free a roster spot to be used on the aforementioned SF, and would likely save luxury tax if the SF was brought in for the minimum. The question is, is the following PG rotation good enough not to be our downfall in a championship run?
PG - Parker, Vaughn, Barry/Gino/Williams
Good enough, or do we need a 3ed specialist PG on the roster?
Udrih is better than most of the nba third string PGs.![]()
On talent, yes.
Playoff minutes 06/07 Udrih - 20 minutes. Team worst in net production (pts.), on court/off court value, Roland Rating, PER, relative PER (to opposite position)...
Do we really want to spend a roster spot and 1.7 million or so, on a guy that can't get minutes, even at the end of blowouts. Or would we be better off with acceptable 3ed PG coverage by comittee, and another roster spot for a big SF or SF/PF tweener.
On talent, Beno is a great backup PG, borderline starting PG.
Last year Beno was a good third string PG.
If Spurs don't do another move this summer, they will have a great starting PG, an average backup PG and a good third string PG. Spurs PG rotation is fine.
Trading Beno to save money and/or to open a roster spot is another question.
Yeah, but he's worse than the third stringer on the Spurs (Vaughn).
I don't know a lot of third string players who have played more than 15mpg during 6 straight year vefore signing with Spurs.![]()
We have found Beno's role- he's a really good third string PG! Now, if he got paid like one would people be so mad to have him around. As a min salary player Beno would still make $800,000. A seventh year back up PG would make over $1M.
Is the dollar savings between keeping Beno and bringing in someone else as the 3rd PG really that significant when you consider Beno's talent and the fact that he is in a contract year?
Parker and Vaughn will be good enough. Lets see if Barry and Beno are even here when we start the season. If Beno does stay, he will hardly see any action anyways.
Who in the is WE?
I took me out of the we equation. I stay home and watch the games and don't pay for .
When did you become the WE???
If they want to pay Udrih 1.7 and bonner 3 then so be it...
They're stupid, but hey it.. it's their money not we money.
Magic Johnson's best contract paid him a little over 3 mill and that's what Bonner is getting...
If I was WE, I would say, bye. Dude didn't even play a got damn worthy minute in the post season, neither did Beno, Butler, White or any of these scrubs, but yet, spurstalk klan members want them back.... these guys are the practice squad of the team and all of them are dispensable....
We.
That may be the first time I've ever heard that on this board.
What, that Beno has talent? Beno has loads of talent. The guy is extremely capable. He simply is severely lacking in mental toughness and has never been able to overcome certain obstacles in the NBA. Thats why it's very likely to see a team take a flyer on this guy and give him a shot. If he works out he could be a great player.
In listening to the NBA package for Spurs games (half are the other team's broadcast), Beno has a much better reputation around the laegue than he does here.
The usual comment is, "Beno Udrih would be starting for a lot of teams around the league." The Celtics' guys are especially enamored.
The Spurs could probably trade him fairly easily.
Trading Beno for trading Beno makes no sense. You have to had a reason to trade him.
You can have :
- A financial reason : For the moment we don't even know the luxury tax threshold and Holt is maybe fine with paying some luxury taxe like he did this year and last year.
- An asset reason : if Spurs can find a team ready to give up something that can help Spurs for Beno, a trade make sense. This reason is highly unlikely.
- A roster spot reason : If Spurs need a roster spot for a player, trading Beno makes sense. However, this player must be cheap and able to help Spurs more than Beno or be a good prospect. If this player isn't a PG, he must be even more interesting because you unbalance the roster just for him.
If Holt is fine with Spurs financial situation, trading Beno for nothing just to sign a scrub makes no sense at all.
Agreed.
And as far as B's go, Beno > Bonner. (9 mil?????!!!!!)
(As an aside, I hit my first hole-in-one today. 137 yard par 3.)![]()
