Spurs discuss trade for Bucks’ Jefferson
By Adrian Wojnarowski
The San Antonio Spurs are in serious discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks for forward Richard Jefferson, league executives told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday.
The proposed deal would have the Spurs send send veterans Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto to the Bucks, who are looking to shed the remaining two years, $29.2 million on Jefferson’s contract for the Spurs’ expiring contracts.
The deal isn’t completed, but league executives say both teams appear motivated to get it done.
Jefferson is the athletic, scoring forward that Spurs have craved to complement the aging tandem of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs have been pursuing the New Jersey Nets Vince Carter too, but it appears Jefferson is the deal that they can make now.
After arriving in Milwaukee last summer from New Jersey, Jefferson averaged 19.6 points for the Bucks last season.
Bowen, 38, has been a staple of the past three Spurs championships and one of the NBA’s most dogged defenders.

Too good to be true.
That isn't much to give up for a guy like Jefferson. Now that it's out some other team will likely come up with a better offer.
I wouldn't mind pulling off this trade, but the thought of not being able to bring Bruce back or find another big is what would make me hesitant in making it happen.
Now I REALLY hope we have something in the works to address our frontcourt depth...
If we do this, does this mean our 2010 plan is out the door?
Disregarding that, I will say....yes!
more scoring??!! please nooo....atleast go for batum for a bowen replacement...
i hope this deal falls thru the cracks....gahh
Yeah, if we do this, we better have some bigs in mind to snag...maybe thats a sign that gist will be on the roster next year? who knows...exciting stuff, though.
that would be sick if it went through, but im not sure who would want washed up players in bowen and oberto.
That would be a great trade for the Spurs.
I'd be all up for RJ to come over... though late in games when we need stops. adn take care of the ball he shouldn't be there...
Better than nothing, I guess.
I don't like Jefferson much and that's not even considering his salary.
RJ 14.2 $M in 09/10, and 15.2$M (ETO) in 10/11
Bowen, Oberto, KT 11.6 $M in 09/10 (partially guaranteed)
1) if it goes through, the Spurs are eating Lux tax in 09/10. I think this makes it doubtful.
2) 11.6*1.25 + 0.1 = 14.6 > 14.2 yes, this isCBA legal.
3) We'd be pretty short of big men. Duncan, Bonner, Mahinmi. Need to add at least 2, including 1 veteran.
This would be a great trade. I've always been a big fan of Air Gay.
How old is Jefferson?
Just turned 29 on sunday.
I approve of this trade.
If we do this, then this means that this trade IS the culmination of the 2010 plan. You stack up on expiring contracts going into the summer of 2010, and you can either use them as trade bait or use the cap space to sign a big name free agent in the summer. All things considered, they weren't likely to get a name much bigger than Jefferson.
He turned 29 two days ago.
I guess all the chips are going towards Mahinmi.
What is the downside to this trade? He has a bloated salary but he's still a pretty damn good player to get at a salary dump price. Bowen would be cut and could come back. Oberto was going to get cut anyways. Thomas showed in the playoffs that he's far from anything special.
RJ as a fourth wheel? Uh, yes please.
Why have his rebounding numbers been so poor the past 3 years? Are all AZ SFs destined to be unimpressive rebounders?
28 I think.
Seriously...anyone who thinks this is a bad trade needs their head examined. Jefferson for nothing...and there is about a 90% chance we get Bruce back? No-brainer.
As far as the personal depth goes (especially among big men), the only player you're really losing in this trade is Kurt Thomas. It's very possible that Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto would be waived and then brought back.
Pretty good deal for the Spurs, though he's a bit overpaid. Bowen will get cut and come back, so he can mentor the young guys. So basically, you'd get RJ for Oberto (who will likely retire) and Thomas.
I'm guessing another trade will come for a big too.
