In case you haven't noticed, the start of the public school year was pushed back to the end of August. Tax-free weekend was originally created to benefit parents of schoolkids.

As far as I remember, the start of school has always been at the end of August. Last year the Tax Free weekend was way earlier and school started on August 24th or 28th, sometime between those two dates.

The official start may have been then, but many districts (around D/FW, all) have been starting in mid-August for years b/c the SBOE granted everyone an "exception" just for filling out a piece of paper asking for it. The Leg put a halt to that practice last session and this is the first year in a long while where everyone will actually start at the end of August.

When my oldest (now a freshman) started Kindergarten, it was on Aug. 5th. A few years ago, it passed that schools could no longer start before the week of Aug 21st.

I'd rather pay the tax than deal with the crowds.

I don't think the savings is worth the frustration. Plus I don't ever buy all that much at once. I buy clothing items for them year round.

And no tax savings on school supplies, either. WTF? For both of mine last year, without getting anything fancy or unnecessary, it was almost $100. Did I get my $8.125 off? Nope. Does that make sense? Nope.

I just went and checked out my daughter's school folder for the last 2 years when she was in NEISD and their start dates were:
    2005 - Aug 15th
    2006 - Aug 14th

So with school starting 2 weeks later than usual it makes sense. Also, I think it's now a state wide thing that schools are beginning on the 28th. I could be mistaken on that though.

That might clear the aisles, though.

Tax-free weekend draws large crowds to area malls
    By: Jessica Kludt
    Posted: 8/8/05

Families around Texas flocked to shopping malls this weekend to take advantage of the state's seventh annual sales tax holiday, while a local mall hosted an event aimed at educating parents and children about good health.

In Austin, the 8.25-percent tax was lifted on most clothing and footwear priced under $100. State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn predicted that this year the total savings to taxpayers over the three-day break will be around $47.4 million, which would be an increase of more than $1 million from last year.

Since the inception of the sales tax holiday seven years ago, more and more Texas families have used the weekend each year to do back-to-school shopping for their kids.

"Every year Texans save more," Strayhorn said, "people make their lists and wait for the holiday."

Not all items are tax exempt, a fact that Strayhorn stressed at a press conference on Aug. 3.

"I have repeatedly asked the Legislature to add backpacks and school supplies to the sales tax holiday, along with kids' safety gear," she said.

Vendors prepared for the holiday by having extra sales and adding staff.

"We have two or three people at every register because so many people are shopping," said Miriam Pacheco a saleswoman at Dillard's.

Highland Mall hosted a "Get Fit for School" event that aimed at teaching children and their parents how they can make smart, healthy food and lifestyle choices at the beginning of a new school year.

Matt Finkelstein and Bryan Pascascio from Gold's Gym taught an exercise session to kids and their parents,

"The intent is to make parents aware that children are at a risk of getting obesity related illnesses," Pascascio said.

He said children should spend at least 30 minutes a day exercising.

Free immunizations were also provided to children as part of the event.

    Mall Hours

    August 19: 11:00am-7:00pm

I can't figure out why a mall in Austin would open early and close late just for San Antonians. You'd think they'd rather save the money on gas.

Hey, you gotta save a buck somewhere. Not all of us are savvy enough to save money on food and toiletries by being locked up in jail and letting the state pay for them.

Also, self-made millionaires don't become millionaires by not saving every penny they can get their hands on. I make really good money, and I still use coupons at the grocery store.

I plan on retiring by the time I'm 50.

Do Escorts give you a tax break during that week?

    That's very important for me.

Your escorts have the ability to tax you? I think they might be pulling your chain. You should check for the tax certificate - it needs to be in a prominent place like above the headboard or taped on the inner thigh.
