I have a d-link and it works great never had any problems with connectivity issues around the house. Are you planning on going any further than outside your house?
Which router has the best range and costs about 50-70 dollars? I've looked around and saw that the linksys wireless g one's range is about 150 ft, is there any other ones that have better range?

I and my friends have several Linksys that have worked fine for years.
You must use encrypted transmission security to prevent snooping.
well, its for my girlfriends grandparents. they came up here for the summer and have a trailer less than 300 ft outside of the house. they have a laptop and want wireless in the trailer, so they came to me since i already have a router. do you think a dlink wold cover that and how much was yours? was is one of these?

The cheap ones generally don't have the range. I know my DLink has two power settings, but unless you have it by the window at the end of the house where the trailer is, you're looking at tough sledding. Buy something at a store that has a good return policy and try it out. You could also try reading reviews like maybe at CNet.
Thank you, so basically for one to work for sure they are looking in the $100-150 range?
I have this one. D-Link
You can go with one with an extended range booster. I would also be worried about any interfernces that you would have between the home and the trailer.
thanks, yeah im really not sure what to tell them. i mean, i think it can be done but i don't wanna have them buy something and then have it not work and then have to deal with bringing it back and such. what would be my best bet would you think? tell them itd be better to buy a more expensive one or should i haul my router over there and test it first. btw, not sure if this has anything to do with it, but we live out in the country, so theres not as many people around us.
Linksys has been the best IMO. They are also owned by Cisco Systems now too. I have also had very good luck with the Dell TrueMobile as well.
you want 6 times the distance of the Linky's?

thank you, that looks like a possibility and looks like it should work. its 105 at circuitcity right now, so not a bad deal.
There is one on eBay for 50.00 dollars and one for 60.00 dollars.

I have a question along these lines (maybe steve perry could help):
I'm sitting probably 8 feet from my router, and the damn thing keeps losing the connection. It usually happens in 2 levels of intensity. The first happens every 10 minutes or so, it loses connection for about 5 seconds and then comes back on again, although the 'connection lost' bloop in the bottom right corner does not appear. The second actually loses connection and the signal in the task bar pops up. It won't regain connection for a couple of minutes, sometimes for a very long time. the archaic desktop seems to be working fine.
I am still using my free d-link router (DI-524) and have service from comcast (who has a tendency to suck).
There are several other issues like not being able to connect my gaming consoles to the router or get any content from any sort of P2P or torrent program.
please help Mr. Fraser!!!!
What do the lights on your modem do? And also do the lights on your router go out?
they still seem to be flashing at the same rate as they do when it loses connection. I'll check though.
if you're 8 feet from the router, plug in.
alright, just to be sure, this will do the job right?
touche. still have other issues, though.
xp
They sell relays which increase the distance of your wireless router, that's probably the way to go....
jaffies - sounds like interference issues. Most common problem is a wireless phone (2.4GHz will interfere with 802.11b,g). If you have a 2.4GHz wireless phone (and I've also heard issues caused by a neighbor with such devices in an apartment setting) you can TRY to use another channel (you would change that on the wireless router setup/configuration). However the best bet would be to use one of the higher frequency phones (5.8GHz). If you are an apartment dweller you might want to try a different channel first anyway as it's quite possible you are broadcasting on the same channel as one of your neighbors.
Another thing that "can" cause interference typically found in a home but probably not at the rate you encounter it (unless you have hungry people in your house) is a microwave.
But then again you might just have hardware issues. If you are certain it isn't interference you might try connecting to a neighbors wireless network (with their permission of course) to verify your laptop/desktop wireless card is in working order. If the problem follows the card (happens on other wireless networks) you might look to update the driver or just replace the card altogether. To test the access point (router) it's a little tougher unless you already have two wireless devices at the ready... but you could invite one of your laptop carrying friends over to use your wireless network to test if the problem occurs with them as well (and if it does that can either be hardware (router) or more commonly interference as I discussed earlier).
As to the thread starter I would recommend a booster that was already suggested earlier in the thread. The dlink rangebooster link you posted would only help you if the grandparents also purchased a rangebooster access card. You can also try a repeater placed at a window closest to where the trailer is (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=267).
