Beckham to Miss 6 Weeks With Bad Knee
    By BETH HARRIS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - It might be a while before David Beckham steps on the field again for Los Angeles or England.

Beckham, whose five-year contract guarantees an annual salary of $6.5 million, could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy's season because of a sprained right knee. He's played 310 minutes in six games, which comes to about $21,000 a minute if he's out for the season.

The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed Thursday he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee, the team said in a statement.

The injury also means he won't be joining England's national team. Beckham had planned to fly to London on Sunday for 10 days with the team as it prepares to play Israel and Russia in two Euro 2008 qualifying games.

The 32-year-old Beckham was injured in a tackle with Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar in the first half of Wednesday night's SuperLiga le match. The Galaxy lost 4-3 on penalty kicks.

He was expected to be out about six weeks, and will immediately begin rehabilitation, the team said.

That would place his return at mid-October, when the Galaxy would have three regular-season games remaining _ against Toronto FC on Oct. 13, New York on Oct. 18 and at Chicago on Oct. 21.

"It's just gone from one thing to another thing," Beckham said Wednesday night. "Maybe it's time for me to just say, 'I need the rest,' and get it right and don't come back until it's right."

He already had a left ankle injury that caused him to miss seven games since joining the team July 13. That injury occurred while he was playing for England on June 6.

Beckham's extended absence deals a serious blow to the already slim chance the Galaxy had of making the playoffs. Its Major League Soccer record is 3-10-5 _ last in the Western Conference.

"The biggest thing is that we're markedly better when he's on the field," Chris Klein said after Wednesday's loss. "Just having his presence around the guys gives us a much-needed boost. When he's not there, it hurts us."

The Galaxy declined to make any team officials available for comment Thursday.

Coach Frank Yallop was clearly frustrated about the string of injuries that has devastated his team this season, especially the ones involving Beckham.

"He shouldn't play, to be honest. He's hurt, but he's playing," Yallop said Wednesday night. "That shows the character of him and it shows the character of the team because he lifts the team when he plays.

"It's hard because he's struggling with injury. He's trying his best."

Meanwhile, the soccer star's wife, Victoria, has lined up an acting gig. Although Posh e has denied she's interested in an acting career, she is taking a first step by playing herself on an episode of the ABC comedy "Ugly Betty" this fall.

What a mess. I think everyone involved tried so hard to make this work. This took work by every team in the MLS, not just the Galaxy. Not that I feel sorry for him but the pressure on Beckham is astounding. He has not only his team but the English national team expecting him to play well. The English national team sucks and he was a big part of their slim chance.

Agreed... Cúauhtemoc Blanco is living up to his hype - having scored 2 goals and assisted on 4 others in only 5 games. But Beckham, at no fault of his own (injuries), has not had the chance to live up to his.

I don't believe that to be an accurate or fair assessment of the situation.

Every athlete is going to take the money, but the good ones actually perform to deserve it. Beckham has half assed it the whole way on that team, but he shouldn't have take the money if he wasn't going to go balls out for them.

What has he half assed? He has been injured. It sucks but its what happened. People are being way too harsh on him without knowing whats going on.

Anyone that follows soccer will tell you that regardless of liking him or not, he has never, ever half assed anything. The man is a professional.

He never half assed it for Manchester United, Enlgand, or Real Madrid.

Well, maybe going "Hollywood" in LA has softened his compe ive stance. He's a weak ticket now. What a shame.

Well in all fairness the reason he is injured in this first place is because he fought through a nasty injury for the English national team that he suffered while playing for Real Madrid.

Its a confusing string of events.

He was injured this past year and played with a bad injury though his last season with Real Madrid. Even the coach of Real regretted benching him after he signed with LA 'cause of how good he was playing. By playing through the injury with painkillers, his foot was ed up by the time he arrived to America. Now he messed up his knee running for a 50/50 ball with someone.

I'm nowhere near a Beckham fan. But the only thing you can fault him with is risking his health in Spain the months when he knew he was coming to LA, not for being half-assed.
