NEW YORK, Sept. 5, 2007 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers selected the rights to JR Pinnock, a 6-5, 205-pound guard from George Washington, with the number one overall selection in the 2007 NBA Development League Expansion Draft.

Pinnock started 15 of his 21 games played of the 2006-07 D-League season with the Arkansas RimRockers, averaging 31.1 minutes, 11.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. He scored in double-figures in 12 games while handing out seven or more assists on five occasions. Pinnock was a member of the Washington Wizards Summer League Team in 2007 and also participated in training camp with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Other first round selections included Jeremy Richardson (Fort Wayne Mad Ants), Brian Jackson (Utah Flash) and Will Conroy (Iowa Energy).

Each team that participated in the Expansion Draft will submit a preference list of its selected players to the D-League Office. Players from each teams list will have the opportunity to sign a league contract and play for that team next season.

A draft board can be found here.

Upon first glance, it looks like Iowa picked up the most complete lineup but I think at least two of those guys (Conroy and Schenscher) are starting the season in Europe. Utah drafted a full lineup that might actually play in the D-League. Fort Wayne got everything but a true center and a distributor.

The Vipers are completely stacked from positions 1-3 and could have a great small ball lineup if they pick up an athletic big man (Tucker, Pinnock, Farmer, Thomas, ?). Great move picking up a Spanish speaking player with the first pick.

If I remember well Tucker and Gilchrist have signed somewhere in Europe.

A player that could be interesting to follow in D-league is Brian Greene. He played last year in French league and was very good but he want to stay in the US this year because his wife is pregnant. If you remember, he played against Spurs in Lyon during the preseason and was quite good. Maybe Spurs/Toros will draft him if he decide to play in D-League this year.

Do you know when is the D-League draft ?

I'll keep an eye on Greene. The D-League draft is close to the beginning of the NBA season since the draft list isn't complete until the last NBA roster cuts. I think it was November 1 or 2 last year.
