Owens looking to put 'O' back in T.O.

    By Terrell Owens
    Special to the Star-Telegram

As rapper Jay-Z once said, "let me introduce myself."

My name is Terrell Owens, but you may know me as "T.O." I'm a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys and MAN, am I glad to be here. First, I want to say thank you to owner Jerry Jones for giving me the opportunity last year to be a Cowboy.

I believe it was a blessing for coach Wade Phillips to be here at this point in my career. We see eye-to-eye, and you don't know how good that feels. My wide receivers coach, Ray Sherman, has also done a fine job. He is a player's coach and quite frankly, he understands me. I will always play my heart out, even when I am injured and many people have witnessed that, and millions of you know what I mean. But this year for Coach Phillips, my teammates and the Cowboy fans, I will go beyond that.

There have been numerous great football players who have played with that Star on their helmet. Many have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame, as witnessed this year when Michael Irvin became a member. I want to publicly say "Congratulations" to Michael Irvin.

Michael is part of an outstanding legacy of wide receivers, and I hope to continue that tradition. The le of being a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver is something I take great pride in. So for all the past players, my teammates and I will play in their honor this year.

As for last year, although it was a frustrating and disappointing season, I view it as a building block for our future success. One positive from last year was playing with Tony Romo, getting our timing down, learning his likes and dislikes. The relationship between a quarterback and a wide receiver is very important to the passing game. It is the most important relationship between two athletes on the football field. Having had a full year with Romo will increase our success rate. It also doesn't hurt to have two talented running backs in Marion Barber and Julius Jones running the ball.

Since the end of the season, I have been itching to get back on the football field; it felt as if I only gave you guys the "T" without the "O." As you witnessed, training camp was smooth. Other than a few muscle spasms, this is the best I have felt in many years. I have been running harder, lifting more weights and catching more balls.

My talent and confidence always force me to the front line, and when the Giants roll into Texas Stadium today, that's where I will be, on the front line. Eli and the G-men will be ready. Tiki has retired, so I am sure Eli will try to carry the load, but I know our "D" will be pumped and up to the challenge. Our offense will be ready also, and if we play as a team, we will win as a team.

Hopefully today, it will be a team win, and I challenge every fan to come out and scream for our team, THE DALLAS COWBOYS! Ya know, enough is enough, GETCHA POPCORN READY AND ADD BUTTA!

Beginning today, Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens will write a weekly column that will appear only in the Star-Telegram. Owens said he plans to offer assessments of a previous game or expectations for an upcoming game. It will all depend on the situation. Mainly, Owens said it's about him trying to connect with Cowboys fans in an unfiltered format. "It's basically me actually trying to reach the fans," Owens said. "I think sometimes some of the stories are one-sided. Fans get their perspective from what [the media] writes. This will be a direct interaction with the fans. It will be straight from T.O."

He sure is in a good mood since Parcells left. We'll see how he acts once/if he faces adversity.

yea this is a pretty cool idea, but man does he seem happier this year. He sure did show up just like he said, 1 touch one touchdown, well almost 3 touches 2 touchdowns, I will take that percentage any day. He also seems to be a blessing for the young guys, he gave them the space and they stepped up. Witten was witten.

Meh. He was half-assing it in the beginning of the game. The first 3 times it was thrown to him he either broke off the route when he shouldn't have or had already stopped running.

Yeah, those balls thrown by Romo were just right on the mark early on.

Hard to tell when by the time TO shows up on camera he's standing still. Romo was just about right on when throwing to anyone not named TO early on, so I'd say it had more to do with Owens than Romo.

TO was pouting a bit. I am sure the Giants were double teaming him. Then they had to stop to help with Witten. Then TO started to get open. That one handed catch in the endzone was awesome. With Glen out I am not that worried. Crayton can catch just as good. We are fine on offense. I still prefer Barber over Julius. His vision is better and he knows how to use his blockers. Julius is too one dimensional.

It'd still be nice to have a consistent deep threat in the passing game, and Glenn was really the only one we had. Crayton is a mini-TO and Hurd is a mini-Crayton. Some speed on the outside would help a lot.

The O-line actually seems to block better for Baber. He seems to get holes to run through consistently while Jones just has a blob with defenders coming up behind him as well. It's kind of weird. The offense certainly has run smoother with Barber in the game last year and yesterday though (except when Jones goes off on one of his 150+ yard games).

I'm not sure how Jones is one dimensional though. He's got at least 2 (he can run and he can catch out of the backfield pretty well).

What I mean by one dimensional is he is just fast. He doesn't make people miss and does not know how to use his blockers. He never runs over people like Barber can. He is kind of like Herschel Walker where he can only run north and south. Not elusive in any way.

Ah, ok. Jones can make people miss, but only in the open field. He can't get away from people in the hole and he doesn't really break tackles. He never looked like someone who would run people over.

I do like Jones. But he's way too inconsistent. Right now Barber is certainly the better back though, and it looks like Phillips/Garrett knows that since a couple times last night Barber played consecutive series (once in the second and once in the third I believe), which is something he hasn't done much of previously except late in the game.

I think the tandem might actually be better if Barber started and Jones played more in the second half than the way they are doing it now.

That's a tough thing to tell, it looked to me like a couple of miscommunications where the QB and WR were thinking different routes. Not all that uncommon for the 1st RS game after not playing for over two weeks, and it did seem to clear up and they got on page after halftime.

Witten or anyone over the middle is going to be the key to beating the outside two deep double on TO. Witten or Crayton can help bring them out of it by beating the LB to spots while Romo looks off the safeties to the outside, and the Cowboys can also send TO on crossing routes over the middle to get away from the safety but behind the LB. Of course, all of that is contingent on the OL giving Romo the kind of time to survey the field and look safeties off like they did last night. OL looked pretty damn good.

Well one thing I think we all can agree on is that the offense is the least of their problems.

Yea those 3 or 4 balls with players open that sailed 10 yards out of bounds were dead on to the other guys. I have never seen a quaterback who had that many problems throwing a fade route.

Personally I think it was a lot of miscommunication, but who know. all that matters is they got on track in the second half.
