Alan Anderson was with the Bobcats for two seasons and was waived midway during the year last year.

Hes a 6'6 swingman that shows a lot of effort on defense and is a decent shooter (albeit, not wonderful from long-range).

It looks like we might actually have a few competant training camp invites this year:

    Hassan Adams
    Alan Anderson
    Alex Garcia

All of these players have been linked with the Spurs as potential training camp invites and all of them have two years experience already in the league. Hopefully we can get these guys into camp and maybe find an overlooked gem.

He's working out with a different team this week and then the Spurs next week. So who knows if he'll even be in camp.

But I figured this thread would be better than starting another pro or anti Scola thread.

    If you don't give a , don't comment.

Some people are interested to know which players might be in camp.

I know, let's talk about Tony banging Eva. Because that is what this forum should be about. Or maybe how the Spurs are the bestest ever.

Most of these new posters are horrid.

Alan Anderson, a 6'6" defensive-minded swingman? Spurs already signed Udoka, but it's better than a guy like Rueben Boumtje-Boumtje (sp) who doesn't have a Talent's place on the Knicks of making ANY NBA team.

Alex Garcia? Already have Beno and Vaughn, and the combo is more than strong enough to make it next year. But, at least the Spurs are still looking to improve, and are sending the message that there will be some compe ion for those last few spots in the rotation. Compe ion is ALWAYS good, both for the fans and for the team.

I've honestly never heard of Alan Anderson before, and the news that he (specifically) will be doing a workout in SA really does nothing for me. But, I am excited that the Spurs are still looking to improve the roster (whereas some teams might stop at, say, a championship... or four), and this kind of stuff can't make me wait for the season to start!

Nice find, Kori. Thanks for the update!

I saw Anderson play a couple of games against the Toros last season. He was the third swingman in a really prolific rotation for Tulsa. He shot a good percentage but wasn't overly impressive on defense. I believe the first game was one of those patented BJ Elder scoring fests, though I see Anderson also dropped 40 on one of the better D-League teams in Sioux Falls as well. Maybe Mo McHone remembered that.

We are working out some pretty good guards. Makes me think we are still shopping Beno and Barry.

The more I think about it -- if we can't get some really tall small forward, maybe we can get one who is a strong rebounder/defender or something like that. Something between Devin Brown and Malik Rose (of course we could just wait for Malik to be bought out). In that vein, I'd like to invite Terrance Thomas or Jeff Varem or Justin Bowen to workout/camp. All are like 6'6"-6'7" converted PFs but they can hit the occasional three.

can't see it any different. Spurs already have 5 wings under contract. a player like Anderson couldn't be send to D-league.
usually the 5th wing on the roster is the reserve and get's some 5-10 minutes every 3rd game. absolutly no sense to carry a 6th wing on the roster IMO. (a project for D-league maybe)

shopping Barry would make the most sense, if Spurs didn't have to take back the same salary. IMO he will lose most of his minutes to Udoka. he might play some point, but considering the Spurs made an offer to Hudson and work out Garcia, it doesn't look as if Pop thinks about this as the plan A scenario. and Barry had lost the spot in the regular PO rotation, also a sign that he no longer is expected to play an important role with the Spurs.

I don't think Spurs need a player like him right now and I don't see them signing him if he ask a significant amount of guaranteed money.

Anyway, working out quite good players is always interesting for a team.

Former Charlotte Bobcat Alan Anderson visits Cleveland Cavaliers
Friday, September 07, 2007Branson WrightPlain Dealer Reporter
Guard/forward Alan Anderson worked out for the Cavaliers on Thursday at their new practice facility in Independence, according to league sources.

Anderson, 6-6 and 220 pounds, played two seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats. He averaged 5.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 53 career games with the Bobcats.

League sources said several players have worked out for the Cavs and the team plans visits from several more before the start of training camp on Oct. 2. One player expected to visit is Allan Houston.

Houston, 36, retired two years ago because of an arthritic left knee. His last full season was in 2002-03, when he averaged a career-high 22.5 points per game with the New York Knicks.

It is believed the Cavs are not interested in Cleveland native Charles Oakley, 43, who also is attempting a comeback. Oakley ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^last played in the NBA during the 2003-04 season with the Houston Rockets.

He's turning 26 this year... I don't know how valid is this scouting report of him when he was in college... but here it is...

    http://www.draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=391

    Strengths

Anderson is a physical, strong SG/SF that likes to post up and can defend with toughness. He is very good at scoring in the post for a guard, thanks to a very solid back to the basket game, and a surprisingly effective short hook shot. He is a strong finisher close to the hoop and knows how to use his physical strength to his advantage.

He has improved his outside range over his career and is a moderately good outside shooter at this point. He's not a great shooter, but he can shoot from deep and usually makes them if he is left open. He has a very good touch around the basket and in the post is where he is most dangerous on offense.

Anderson has very good hands; if he gets position down low, he just vacuums the ball into his grasp. He usually makes good decisions and if he has the mismatch against a smaller guard, he will take advantage of it.

On offense, Michigan State sometimes uses Anderson as the PG and that shows that he has some versatility and can handle the basketball. He is not a true PG, but he does have ball-handling skills and can set up his teammates if asked to.

Anderson is a very good leader as well; he has been one of the hardest working players on Michigan State over the past four seasons. He is an intense, fiery compe or that gets along with his teammates but also expects the best out of them as well. He has a history of making big shots throughout the season and is not afraid to take the big shot if he needs to.

    Weaknesses

Anderson lacks a true position in the pros because at Michigan State he has been asked to play four different positions on offense and defense.

He has adequate ball handling skills for a SF, but his lack of range on his jump shot will hinder his performance at the shooting guard position. However, in the NBA, the position prospects play is usually the position they can defend, and Anderson can defend NBA SF's I believe, even though he may be just a bit undersized for it. The position issue is a question about Anderson because he might be labeled a tweener. He has the size of a guard yet he has played most effectively in the post in college. That's also where coach Izzo usually sends him on defense as well.

Anderson is not a true SG because he cannot shoot that well from the perimeter. He has improved on his shooting over his career, but overall he is still well below average in this aspect, shooting only 30% on the year on a limited number of attempts. What will get Anderson on the court are his defensive skills, not his offensive skills. At times Anderson has been known to hit the outside shot, but generally, he is a streaky shooter at best outside of the paint.

Anderson is only average athletically for an NBA SG. He does not run the floor very well and looks a bit slow on offense. Coach Izzo having Anderson guard PF's on defense has hurt his NBA potential because at the next level he is a SG/SF, however he rarely guards players on the perimeter.

However, to his credit, it is impressive that a guard with a 6-6 220 frame can defend Big Ten PF's. That also helps explain the type of player Anderson is, he does what's asked of him and doesn't complain.

At times, his fundamentals on defense are poor and he gets a bit complacent. Since he is used to defending slower plays most of the time, when he switches out on perimeter players he'll often get beat off the dribble. To be effective in the league he will have to learn all the tricks to become a good overall defender and will have to learn how to play against players that are better athletes than he is.

His overall ball handling ability is also a question; at times, he dribbles the ball too much and sometimes has the ball stolen from him if pressured. He can create off the dribble a bit, but I would not say he has a quick first step. Instead, he uses his strength and footwork to get into the lane.

    another scouting report:

    http://www.nbadraft.net/profiles/alananderson.asp
    NBA Comparison: Byron Russell
Strengths: Very athletic. Good size for the NBA 2 position. Excels at driving to the basket and overpowering defenders with his strength. Very good frame, strength and determination. Rebounds the ball well. Desire is excellent. Has very good potential.
Weaknesses: Must become a better passer and ballhandler.
I remember, it was a bit surprising, that he went undrafted 2005. most mocks had him as a more or less sure 2nd round pick (somewhere around 40)

btw. he turns 25 this year.
