The ipod is a portable Hard disk to a PC, so plug it in the new computer and drag and drop the files wherever you want.

But don't do it through iTunes because if I am not mistaken your ipod will only update what is on your itunes and if you don't have the same songs on there (I think) it will wipe it off your iPod. I have never tried it with mine though.

It will do that only if you have the computer/itunes "authorized" for that specific ipod and the auto sync function switched on - but just to be safe just do it as I wrote and use it as a portable HDD.

I've heard that the new iPod Touch has had this feature disabled.

"No disk mode. We're not quite sure why this disappeared on the iPhone to begin with (cellphone data sensitivity, perhaps?), but its the same on the iPod touch and we don't like it one bit."

Yeah, this sucks big time, but since its such a basic function of the device itself I'm pretty confident we'll see a hack soon.

yea...I'm having problems with all this authorization it's giving me...it think it will only let me transfer what I have bought on itunes but nothing else...idunno

can you tell me how to do this...I know nothing about this ...I went to itunes help menu, and followed what they said, but like i mentioned before this authorization window came up and told me I didn't have the songs authorized...

if you don't mind telling me how to do this in an easy to understand way (i don't know anything about computers) that would be of big help...u seem to know ur

    thanks

    OK

I'm assuming you're using a PC and an USB connection. If you're using a PC and a firewire connection it's similar, but not exactly the same. For all other combos I can't help you - it should be similar but I really don't know from personal experience.

Connect the ipod to your original PC, start itunes and click on the ipod. Under options be sure the "Enable disk use" is checked.

Now when you connect the ipod to your PC, it should be recognized as a "Removable Drive" and bear the name you gave it in itunes. Using windows explorer you can now navigate through the ipod at will. the folders with your music are here: ipod_control -> Music Each artist has its own folder. If the folders are marked as read only you right click on the "Music" folder select "properties" and remove the check in the read only option, click "Apply" and chose the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files" and click OK. Now you can copy all the folders and paste them in your local HDD.

Of course if the file are mp3 or do not have any DRM copy protection your only remainig problem is to rename and reogarnize the music in a way that suits you (you can use itunes if you wish). If you have DRM on your files (like songs in the aac format purchased in the itunes store) you will not be able to listen to those until you hack the protection of those files (you can still copy them on another disk though - they just don't work).

Hacking the DRM of itunes is in theory possible according to some news article I've read but I've never bought anything from itunes so I also never had to play with the protection. Google is your friend for that.

    so I did that but...

by Removable Drive do you mean: *my ipods name* (F) (in the "My Computer" folder)

when I click and go into that

I have a list of four things I can click:

    Calenders
    contacts
    notes
    metadate_never_index

I've clicked all of them, but i can't find my music. they are empty

I can't find this folder you talk about:
the folders with your music are here: ipod_control
For some reason that folder doesn't appear.

It's your windows explorer settings. You must disable the function that doesn't show hidden or read only files.

in iTunes when your iPod is connected, on the main screen for the iPod there is a checkbox for "Enable Disk Mode." check that, and you can drag and drop files onto in outside of iTunes in windows explorer. it will work as a portable HDD then. you won't be able to see them through the iPod software, but they will be there in windows explorer.
