If I was him I would retire when Tim does. What is he going to accomplish in the post-Duncan era? If he were to stick around, make it for one year after Tim hangs it up to groom his replacement.
Was Pop serious when he said he'd retire when Tim did? IMO he will go on coaching even with Duncan gone. At least I hope so.

I wouldn't hate on pop if he went when Tim goes. I'd actually judge him if he didn't.
He has said he is going when Tim does. RC too.
Damn I dread the day when we have no more Tim or Pop.![]()
I read somewhere that Pop earns something like $7M per year. If true this makes him one of the highest paid coaches in pro sports, doesn't it? Not that he will starve if he resigns but to leave that kind of money could give a guy second thoughts, you know.. just don't know if Pop has the patience to go through a tumultuous rebuilding phase.. now maybe if the Spurs get lucky in the draft for a 3rd time??
I cant even imagine it
2013. Tim will be 37 by then, and the Spurs will have at least two more trophies IMHO.
Don't worry, these guys have a way to go yet.
Why all the doom threads??? Tim is only 31, and we have at least 3 more years of the Big Three together.
My dream is to see Tim win more championships than MJ....I'd love it even if he tied for 6 championships...Tim would do it without being the ballhog MJ was...
he may stay for an year after Tim's retirement to ensure a smooth transition... AJ will probably be his replacement...
I think and I hope that Pop will retire the same minute as Duncan does. Their relationship is very special and it would be very appropreate if they would retire the same minute. It would be akward to see Pop coaching a team with no Duncan on it.
Why wouldn't Timmy be able to play six to ten more years? What part of his game requires leaping ability or speed?
I doubt Duncan will play more then 5 more years. He's 31 right now. Look at Shaq, he's 35 right now and he's going downhill fast. It's not about leaping ability or speed for big players, but injuries. I don't want to see Duncan at 37 playing 50 games a season and his production down. I'd rather see him retire at 35 or so while he's still among the best in the league and still producing 20+ points and 10+rebounds while playing 75 games or so.
it's an unfair comparison... Shaq is WAY bigger than timmy... in other words... Tim is has been all his carreb more slim and athletic than Shaq that notoriously has been overweighted during some seasons
Ok, then lets take Patrick Ewing as an example. He was the same size as Duncan is and about as athletic as Duncan is. I don't want to see Duncan's final season look like Ewing's; 65 games 4 starts, 13.9 minutes a game, 6 points and 4 rebounds a game. you get my point? I know that it was his last season and he was 39 years old, but still.
The same happened with Olajuwon. STOP playing while you still can play. Hey, maybe Duncan will play until he's 38 or 39. Who knows? I just can't see it happening. He's got the rings, the MVP's and Finals MVP's.
It would be in his and the Spurs best interest to hang it up when Tim does. No point in starting something else you are not going to finish. I think it is a great time to hand it over to someone else and let them build the next generation Spurs team.
Pop and TD will leave the game together. Mike Bud will replace Pop provided another team isn't interested in poaching Pop's disciple to be their HC before then.
when he ing wants to
