I've got a couple PS2 games and some CDs that are scratched. The PS2 games don't load anymore and the CDs skip really bad. My friend told me that if you rub toothpaste into the disc that it will repair the scratches.

Sounds like it would just F up the discs even more. Has anyone tried this and did it work?

No, he said just rub toothpaste on the disc, let it sit for like a minute, and then rinse it off and dry it. No letting toothpaste sit and dry on a CD is going to ruin it.... I doubt the toothpaste would do anything to the laser that reads the games inside the PS2.

I've heard about this, and was wondering the same thing. I can only assume that it would work, the reason I say this is because I heard about it on Regis and Kelly once.(yeah I watch Regis and Kelly now and then big whoop want to fight about it) This guy was on the show giving tips on how to recycle and be "green" (I have no idea how cd cleaning has to do with being "green" but okay) he said that putting toothpaste on a cd and then wipe it off (with a cloth) afterwards would get rid of scratches and marks. I have been meaning to do this with a couple of my burned cd's, just haven't gotten around to it. My advice would be to just try this out on a CD that you would not mind messing up, just in case it doesn't work. Burn a cd with music then purposely scratch it up or just get a cd that is already scratched.

I don't know if you should let it sit, the toothpaste may get "caked" on if you do that. Like I said the guy on R&K squeezed out a line of toothpaste around the cd then wiped it off shortly afterwards.

Yeah I guess I'll just have to test it on something I don't mind ing up. I'm sure I have some burned CDs around here that have a few scratches.

I tried it on a burned CD and the scratches are still there but not as bad, CD doesn't skip nearly as much as it did but on one song it still does.

Dunno if I want to try it on a game but right now the PS2 won't even load these two games so I guess I don't really have anything to lose. I know the PS2 works cuz I use it for DVDs too.

I have NO idea if it works or not. Toothpaste is a mild abrasive so I can see a certain logic. I would be very careful experimenting with it.

Anyway IF you're going to try:

    - Do not apply and then wipe the paste off with circular motion - this is guaranteed to mess up the CD. You must alway wipe any CD/DVD from the center out (or in, but that's more difficult anyway).

    - Do not let the toothpaste dry, I'm pretty sure it would leave minuscule trace of the paste on the disc that would be impossible to remove without destroying the data.

    - If possible use distilled water for rinsing.

    - Make sure the disc is completely clean (without paste) and dry before reinserting it into your player. This will prevent you to screw up the player as well.

I would personally not put toothpaste on a CD without wetting the disc it first.

Good Luck and try it first on a CD you don't care too much about.

    Tell us how it ends

PS: If by any chance this does work make a copy asap.

I've done it before. It helps some. Just don't let it dry too much on the disc.

And BTW, the toothpaste thing does work a little bit.
