Eagles' Owens out rest of season, possibly playoffs with torn ligaments

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia star wide receiver Terrell Owens will miss the rest of the regular season and possibly the playoffs with torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Owens will have surgery Wednesday and stands only an outside chance of being able to play in the Super Bowl in seven weeks -- if the Eagles make it that far, said head trainer Rick Burkholder.

If everything goes well, there's a chance Owens would be able to run in five weeks -- the weekend of the NFC le game.

"The scenario I painted is the best-case scenario, but it is realistic," Burkholder said.

Owens was hurt on the second play of the third quarter of Philadelphia's win over Dallas on Sunday when he was dragged down from behind by Roy Williams on a 20-yard reception. Owens immediately grabbed the back of his leg, which was bent backward, but left the field on his own power.

Testing on Monday revealed a torn ligament in his leg. Owens on Wednesday will have a screw implanted to stabilize and strengthen the ankle joint, Burkholder said.

Owens also has a fracture of his fibula, a few inches below his knee. Burkholder said that injury is actually less serious and will be allowed to heal on its own.

"He's a great player, but can the offense go on? Absolutely," coach Andy Reid said Monday. "We have some pretty good players on this offensive unit, so it'll still function and do very well this week."

Owens, who has 77 catches for 1,120 yards and a team-record 14 touchdowns, hobbled around on the sideline, then needed help to make it into the locker room.

Owens has missed just seven games in his nine-year career.

The win over Dallas gave Philadelphia home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Eagles play next Monday night at St. Louis and finish the season on Jan. 2 at home against Cincinnati. Philadelphia will open the playoffs Jan. 15 or 16.

The Eagles' other starting wide receiver, Todd Pinkston, hurt his knee against the Cowboys and Reid said he was walking with a limp Monday.

Without Owens, the Eagles will be left with basically the same lackluster receiving corps that has disappeared when needed in the le games. Freddie Mitc or Greg Lewis could join Pinkston as the other starting wideout. Those three have a combined 60 catches for 1,073 yards.

Reid said the Eagles will activate wide receiver Billy McMullen.

"It will be an opportunity for some young guys to play," Reid said.

In two playoff games last year, the Eagles had one touchdown catch from a wide receiver.

None of the wide receivers caught a pass in the second half of the Eagles' 12-7 win over the Cowboys.

The Eagles (13-1) set a franchise record for regular-season victories. They've finished first in the conference three straight years, but couldn't take advantage of playing at home in the last two NFC championship games, losing to Tampa Bay and Carolina. The Eagles also lost in the NFC le game in 2002, in St. Louis.

This is so much bull .
    TOUGH NEWS FOR T.O.

    December 20, 2004

Further testing on Terrell Owens revealed a fractured fibula, but it's a sprain of his deltoid ligament that will require surgery and could sideline him up until Super Bowl Sunday. "We'e holding out hope he can return," said head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder.

    ..

every ing year, someone else gets injured to keep us out of the SuperBowl, it always happens to the Eagles, 2 years ago with McNabb, last year with Westbrook, and now with TO.

this is so much bull .
TO needs surgery, and he wont be back until possibly Super Bowl sunday.

Running up the score versus Green Bay was when the Eagles sealed their own fate... those who run up the score are destined to suffer.

Scott, ever read Gregg Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback NFL column? He agrees with you. Snips from http://www.nfl.com/news/story/7998727 below.

(Dec. 14, 2004) -- It's fun to win by a huge margin, but running up the score may come back to haunt you. Just ask Pittsburg of Kansas, the No. 1 ranked Division II team. The Gorillas' frantic efforts to run up the score, do ented in previous TMQs -- earlier this year Pittsburg of Kansas ran a fake punt while ahead 63-7 -- sent them into the playoffs as the highest-scoring college team in history, averaging 60 points per game. But on Saturday in the Division II championship, Pittsburg of Kansas honked out, losing to Valdosta State. Had Pittsburg of Kansas won its earlier games by smaller margins, the team would have stood a much better chance of winning the le it coveted.

Consider teams that have self-destructed by running up the score. Last season, No. 1 ranked Oklahoma ran the score up to 77-0 against undermanned Texas A&M. From that point in the season the Sooners imploded, shortly afterward losing the Big 12 le game to underdog Kansas State, then losing in the BCS championship to underdog Louisiana State. Running up the score not only placed Oklahoma's name on a list of those to be punished by the football gods, but broke the team's sense of sportsmanship. Later, when the pressure was on, the Sooners had no steadfastness to fall back on.

Or think of the game that this column calls the most disastrous event in the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars -- the team's 62-7 victory over Miami in the 1999 divisional playoff round. Jax ran up the score in the fourth quarter, and Jaguars players openly taunted the Miami sideline where stood the great Dan Marino, playing his final contest. The football gods promptly exacted vengeance by handing Jax a defeat the following week in the AFC Championship Game, held on Jacksonville's field. Years of losing ensued as more punishment; only this season have the Jaguars begun to recover from the calamitous disaster of winning by 62-7.

Sportsmanship is not just an empty term, though obviously many invoke this term in empty ways. Sportsmanship has both to do with how you honor your opponent and how you manage your own inner fears. Teams that seek to humiliate opponents by running up the score lose the ability to respect their opponents -- and pay dearly when they line up against an equal. Teams that run up the score gain experience laughing at the other sideline, but learn nothing about calling on character under duress. At the deepest level, sportsmanship is about finding out who you, yourself, really are. What you want to find out about yourself is that you respect others and possess character. Teams that run up the score, disdaining sportsmanship, neither respect others nor build their own character.

Pro football coaches seem to understand this dynamic better than college and high-school coaches. TMQ has many complaints about NFL coaches -- if I see one more punt inside the opponent's 40! -- but lauds them for rarely running up the score. The Jacksonville 62-7 game was an exception; usually NFL teams ahead by 20 or more in the fourth quarter do little but grind the clock. Of course in the NFL all that matters is winning; there are no polls, like in college and high school, where many voters have never seen the teams perform and cast ballots based partly on winner's point margin. But NFL coaches also seem to understand that running up the score rarely benefits the victor.

Note: This season, Oklahoma renounced running up the score and tried to hold down its final total against overmatched Baylor, even knowing the BCS voters reward big victory margins. Because the scales have fallen from the eyes of Sooners coach Bob Stoops, TMQ now expects the football gods to favor Oklahoma over USC in the national collegiate championship at the Orange Bowl.

Maybe he did more damage when he tried to walk to the locker room instead of using a golf cart. Just wondering.
