if only they had Beno
The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced guard Randy Foye has suffered a stress reaction of his left patella (knee cap). On Monday, Foye received an MRI and a CT scan, which revealed the injury. Foye will be out indefinitely.
What does this mean for the Timberwolves?
Sebastian Telfair will now get his shot to start. If he is able to play at a high level in Foye's absence, he may very well hold onto the role as starting point guard for Minnesota even after Foye returns.
Friday night in Minnesota's final preseason game against Milwaukee, Telfair played the lion's share of minutes at the point. In nearly 27 minutes of action, Telfair scored 7 points, dished out 6 assists and only turned the ball over twice. For those in attendance, Telfair's contribution was not truly reflected in the box score, as he played a great floor game during the Timberwolves romp over the Bucks.
Marko Jaric now becomes valuable to Minnesota again, rather than relegated to the end of the bench. Although Jaric seems overwhelmed as a point guard at times, his job will now be to run the offense without turning the ball over in limited minutes as Telfair rests.
If Jaric is unable to give the Timberwolves quality minutes off the bench, do not be surprised to see Greg Buckner running the point. With both Foye and Telfair missing good portions of training camp, Buckner—along with now departed Ricky Davis-filled in and played like a veteran who understand the value of the ball.
Although frustrating for Randy Foye, this may end up to be a blessing in disguise for Sebastian Telfair. Foye can now sit back and watch his new teammates in games that count and see how best to run this team upon his return.
As for Sebastian Telfair, this may be his shot at showing he still belongs.
