    JULIAN MOZO [email protected]

Me abre espacios, me da confianza.

—No sé.

—¿Te sorprende a vos estar jugando tan bien?

Me siento líder, importante...

No puedo hacer nada igual. Pero si llega, mucho mejor.

With Ginóbili there is more than meets the eye... Manu does not stop surprising. His mentality does not allow him to be satisfied and every year wants something more. This start of the season is a new example. The bahiense (Bahia Blanca Native) used the free time between seasons (did not play Prolimpycs) to prepare himself as and the results are better than ever. With 30 years, Gino moves like a veteran or, rather, as one of the few superstars in this league. The high production of every night turns him, until now, in MVP candidate. Why not? Manu spoke with Olé about his moment.

    - How do you explain the great start of the season?

    - First because I am physically very well, powerful, fresh air... Not playing with the NT in September allowed me to rest and to be very good. This start I did not use it to get into rhythm, I already was. The other reason is that I am nailing it. It opens spaces to me, gives me confidence.

    - Is this your best start?

    - I don´t remember the other starts, but I would think it is. The certain thing is that not very often I felt like this. It also joins with the good start of the team and that powers it up.

    - And is this your best level?

    - I don´t know. Other times I reached this level in December, others in April and sometimes in playoffs, in June...

    - It surprises You to be playing so well?

    - It´s difficult to hope to put up so many points or to have such good start, but it knew that this start was going to be good because I was healthy, mentally well...

    - What you show that makes the most impression is the comfort level that you have in the field , as if you were a veteran who knows it all. You feel like this?

    - No that i know it all, but that I am a veteran is becoming a fact (he smiles). I have 30, six seasons and more experience. But I believe that for three years I already been this comfortable, I feel that I belong to this world, I feel identified with the team and my teammates know what I can give. I feel like a leader, important...

    - In what aspects of your game you see progress?

-(Pop pass behind and bothers him, he laughs and waives) I feel more recognized, more part of the team and with greater experience. In the game I notice the progress in my shot. Now I am on 40% in 3 pointers. That adds to the confidence and causes that the opponent respects you more.

    - You always said that your percentage of 3 pointers became stabilized in 37 or 38%. But now you are at 45%. You seem more ease and comfortable.

    - Yes. I improved my shot every year, the percentage raised by one or two small points and now I am in 45%, higher than expected. I believe that it will be standardized and the objective is to finish near 40%.

    - It is already spoken that you are leading the race for the Best the Sixth Man Award. Are you interested in this?

    - No, not at all. It did´n interest me last year when it was said that and I did not won it. Either now. To be Best the Sixth Man is not attractive. He is just one another player. It is like being the best left-handed player. You are either the best player or the best defender. The 6MOY won´t change anything to me.

    - You can also be back to the All-Star Game but it´s difficult comming off the bench.

    - As I always say: it is a great flattery to be in the All Star, a privilege, but as I said to Pop in chat before the start of the season: I won´t change any of those for one ring. When he raised to me the idea of starting again off the bench, he explained to me that he understands that therefore there are reduced chances, that is more difficult to arrive (to the ASG) being a subs ute, that I have less individual recognition... He asked to me what I wanted to do and I said to him that he decides, that if he thought that the team was better then, i did not have any problem.

    - And what are you said about this at ude for the team?

    - Now, little by little, it is happening more: Jason Terry in Dallas and now Vince Carter in New Jersey. Perhaps they are copying it a little. But I do not see that its that important. I could play a little more, say like 35 minutes, although it did not play them either when i was a starter.

    - In a note with Olé, Bill Walton praised you so much and he said that to were the ideal player to imitate.

    - Those words are a flatter to me, he is somebody very important that has seen a lot of bball, but I do not know if it is for that much. There are others like me.

    - Do you think of yourself as an example in that aspect?

    - In that aspect yes I feel like an example because still there are many selfish players in the NBA, those who only concerns about their numbers or the next contract. I demonstrated that is not my case. I consider myself a team player, that my teammates respect and want to me to play by my side. But I either do not bealive to be the only that makes things like this, oh...

    - What do you think that your teammates value more about you?

    - The hard i play every game, that I give myself in each play and that I always want to win.

    - Many think that you go all the way to the Hall of Fame. Do you think the same?

    - I do not know what is needed or what parameters are taken. I know that I have a quite successful career, with three rings and an Olympic championship, but I do not know if they consider achivements outside the NBA. I cannot make anything like that happen. But if it arrives, then better.

I can't think of any other player of his caliber who is so willing and able to transition from being a bench player to a starter with such ease. It's quite amazing. Guys like Jason Terry, Barbosa, and now Carter who are also technically "Starters" don't have the same accolades that Ginobili does...3 rings, gold medal, Euro MVP, the following of an entire country, etc. And the fact that he doesn't mind when Pop jacks him from starter to bench player etc is amazing and really doesn't get enough praise.

This is what I love about Manu is that he'd rather win then be an All Star or earn any other individual award

That is one of the reasons Manu is such a special player.
