adam jones. From TOOL
Any style? I dunno. I keep arguing with this kid that the guy from Metallica is no where NEAR the best ever... He refuses to listen. Anyways, I don't know how many people have heard of him, but I definitely think Buckethead is one of the best technical guitar players out there. He can seriously play anything.
I don't really listen to tool much and don't know a whole lot about them. Song recommendations?
I could list a ton of songs but from the top of my head:
Eulogy
Pu
The Grudge
Parabola
The Patient
Wings fo Marie
Roseta Stoned
Prison Sex
If you like rock then you are missing out. Watch em live and you will become a lifetime fan. oh yeah....Adam Jones is the .
Never really heard bucket head play, I seen him and thought WTF the kfc thing is stupid, wanna be slash top hat is what came to mind, and it turn me off from hearing what ever video it was I was seeing.

Metallica isn't the anymore but Kirk Hammett has always been a bad azz guitarist.
I like Eric Johnson, the late Diamond/Dimebag Darrell, and Andreas Kisser of Sepultura.
yo momma
Buckethead is a great guitarist, Slash is one that comes to mind for me since I grew up in the 90s, along with Eddie Van Halen
I'm not some guitar aficionado but can somebody tell me, why is Jimi Hendrix usually thought to be a legendary guitarist? He was active publicly for only like 5 years, but hes usually considered one of the best, I would think people would look for longevity too, for example Eddie VH or even Joe Perry.
Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Hendrix is considered one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history.[1] After initial success in England, he achieved worldwide fame following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival.
Jimi Hendrix helped pioneer the technique of guitar feedback with overdriven amplifiers, incorporating into his music what was previously an undesirable sound. He built upon the innovations and influences of blues stylists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, and T-Bone Walker, and derived style from rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, and Cornell Dupree, as well as from traditional jazz. Part of Hendrix's flamboyant stage persona may have been inspired by rock pioneer Little Richard, with whom he toured as part of Richard's back-up band, "The Upsetters." Hendrix is also widely thought to be influenced by Pete Townshend of The Who, who performed in London when Hendrix started his career there in 1966. Carlos Santana has also suggested that Hendrix's music may have been influenced by his Native American heritage.[2]
From Wikipedia. Dude was amazing. Plus he played left handed!

Dude, you forgot Schism.
Eric Clapton is probably the best guitarist in the world.
A list like this without Slash of Guns N' Roses (and now Velvet Revolver) is just complete and utter bull .
And, why is so much made about Jimmy playing left handed???
He was a lefty.
It's not like he was right handed man who decided to play lefty one day.
The Stone's list is strange.
Joan Jett???
Where the &*^$! is Stevie R. Vaughn???
I've always liked the work of Ric Emmett (both during, and since, Triumph); chops and style.
And I love a good shredder as much as the next guy (or even more), but for pure mastery of the instrument, Grant Geisman is pretty tough to beat.
Hendrix is probably the best. I like listening to Mike McCready from Pearl Jam myself, but it's a personal preference of mine, I wouldn't say he is the best
1. Jimmy Hendrix
2. Stevie Ray Vaughn
3. Eric Clapton
4. Jimmy Page
5. John Squire
He was left hander playing on a right handed guitar. Its just mystique. Hendrix was a mainstream artist that blended jazz, soul and rock....he wasnt the first to do it, but he was the first to sell it as wide and far as he did. And if youve ever seen a dvd/vhs of some of his concerts, you wouldnt be questioning his unquestionable greatness. Or better yet, buy "Are You Experienced?"...my personal favorite, "Remember" and "Are You Experienced?"
Oh, remember the mocking bird, my baby bun
He used to sing for his supper, baby
Yes he used to sing for his supper, babe
He used to sing so sweet
Since my baby left me he aint sang for two long days
So tell me...are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?!
Well, I have.
Its the combination of sound that comes from his guitar that wasnt heard of during his time (and not since either). When all his contemporaries (namely Clapton) fawned all over him, you know something is special.
Kirk Hammit is an excellent guitarist, he should be he was schooled by Steve Vai. Very very technical.
EVH ranks way up there as well, I dont like Van Halen at all (neither Roth or Haggar), but Eddie is a Messiah on strings.
For educational purposes, my brother used to listen to some European dude named (im about to look it up on Google) Ynvai Malmstein? gimme a sec...whoa, way wrong on the spelling...Yngve Johann Malmsten, hes basically a concert guitarist in the classical sense...watch the link (and follow up on the Related column). Hes ing awesome and youve never heard of him.
This is a subjective argument. I dont really have a personal favorite. I just appreciated excellent musicians no matter the genre. Which is why I cant respect rap. There isnt a musician to be found on 90% of the . I give credit to the people who organize the "beat" or "track" as it were, but even they cant play an instrument. Therefore, theyre not musicians, and if youre not a musician, youre not making music.
I would venture to guess many of the "best guitarists in the world" are unknown.
I have a friend who plays guitar and ive honestly never heard anything like it, its amazing...and he has no formal training.
that's not him. he doesn't wear the new style bucket.

imo he is the best, and his outfit kicks ass.
never even heard of the dude with the KFC bucket on his head...
He took over for Slash on the Axl-led Guns N' Roses.
I'm not questioning his greatness.
I have everyone of his albums and have seen his concerts.
What I was questioning was the fact that people say that he's great because he played left handed. That's a pretty stupid rationale.
He was great and, had he lived longer, could have been even greater than what he was. However, I still think Clapton is a better guitarist.
Buy/download the album "From The Cradle . . ." and it will blow you away.
he quit years ago since axl never wanted to finish an album, which is good. he's been releasing at least 4-5 albums a year since 1992. predictably, axl threw him under the bus when he left. here's a funny quote from Ozzy about him:
I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the ing bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green ing Martian thing! I said, 'Look, just be yourself'. He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother'. So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!'. I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing ing mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up'? Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a mother er!

Les Paul should be way higher on this list. Some of his instrumental stuff from the 50's is just ing insane.
Stevie Ray needs to be way up on that list.
He is so good that when the Rolling Stones first heard him play, they hired him to play at a party they were throwing later that month. David Bowie attended that party and hired him on the spot to play guitar on his upcoming record Let's Dance.....and the rest is history. Hard to believe he has been gone this long already. Interesting that Stevie took Eric Clapton's seat on that helicopter at the last minute, after the concert they were both playing at.
