Jeff McDonald: Re-thinking Ginobili, Parker as All-Stars

Conventional wisdom, both around the league and in this space, has been that an overload of talented guards in the Western Conference will probably prevent the Spurs from sending either Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili to accompany Tim Duncan at next month's All-Star game.

That still might be true. But maybe not.

Parker and/or Ginobili caught a break in their candidacy when the NBA released the results of the fan voting earlier this week. At the finish line, Denver's Allen Iverson had passed Houston's Tracy McGrady for the second starting bid at guard.

What does that mean for the Spurs' pair of potential All-Stars? It means one undeserving guard is out of the way. The coaches, who select the reserves, probably won't offer McGrady a single vote -- after all, he's been hurt for a good chunk of the first half.

It stands to reason that some of the votes that might have originally gone to McGrady, might go to Parker or Ginobili. How this will impact the final incarnation of the All-Star squad remains to be seen. Reserves are announced on Thursday.

There are still a bevy of guards who deserve consideration in the West: Steve Nash, Baron Davis, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Brandon Roy, to name a few. But the chances of the Spurs adding a second All-Star appear to be better this week than they were last week.

It may be the only way he keeps his job.
