Avery preaches the art of the "hard/dirty" foul. If anyone saw Erica Dampier's hip check on Kobe or Dirk's take-down of AK47, you understand the meaning.
It certainly straddles the line between "hard" and "dirty", but AJ i a bit more sensitive about the perception of his team than most coaches. Thus, he's trying to change that perception by forcing Dirk into being a post player and preaching hard fouls and take downs.
I do believe Dirk's actions warrant a 1-game suspension. In the culture of the ol' skool NBA, an opposing player would have exacted revenge on Dirk and the Mavs. If this type of thing keeps up into the playoffs, expect some sort of "git back" from the opposition.
Avery is such a damn copy-cat. How did the Spurs break the soft image? Dirtiest team in the league.
