Teenagers have found a new way to get high and the plant they're using is legal. It's called salvia and some are calling it the "next marijuana."
The drug is easily found in San Antonio. Head shops like Planet K sell the powder-like substance. It's dubbed as an herbal meditation supplement and it only costs about $12.95 a packet.
Salvias are familiar garden plants.
"There's hundreds and hundreds, almost a 1,000 different types of salvias," said Orlando Martinez, a gardening expert.
But the garden varieties aren't the type parents are worried about, Salvia Divinorum is.
The plant extract sells for about $30 an ounce on the internet. The web sites claims salvia will enhance your spiritual growth and is safe and natural. But youtube videos tell a different story. One youtube clip shows a young man stumbling and falling.
"Most of the plants that have that narcotic effect will eventually kill you," said Martinez.
We bought some salvia from Planet K. The brown powder promises an out-of-body experience with deep self-exploration. But when we tried to talk to a Planet K employee about the drug on camera, we were immediately told to leave.
An employee at a similar store described the experience like this: "It makes you, like stupid." They didn't actually sell salvia at their head shop, but the employee said there is a big demand for the drug.
Shops like Planet K that do sell the drug aren't doing anything illegal. Salvia is completely legal in Texas. But state legislators are considering outlawing it.
Some websites that sell salvia even warn: "Time is running out, because it could soon be banned."
Eight states have already banned the drug. Salvia is illegal in Oklahoma and Louisiana.
