Jeff McDonald: Bowen suspended one game for kicking Paul

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- When the Spurs face the Detroit Pistons on the road tonight, they do so without their best perimeter defender.

Bruce Bowen has been suspended one game without pay for kicking Chris Paul during Wednesday's loss at New Orleans, the NBA has announced.

The suspension will break a string of 500-straight starts for Bowen, the longest such streak in the league. It will also leave the Spurs dangerously shorthanded on the wing tonight.

On Thursday, the Spurs dispatched reserve swingman Ime Udoka back to San Antonio to receive treatment for an ankle injury. The absence of both Bowen and Udoka leaves the Spurs with just two players to man the wings tonight -- Manu Ginobili and Michael Finley.

The incident that got Bowen suspended occurred with 5:15 left in the third quarter Wednesday, when Paul and Bowen tangled going after a loose ball. Paul was called for a personal foul on the play.

    PREGAME UPDATE:

Talked to Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer before the game about how the team plans to deal with its dearth of twos and threes tonight. None of the options are optimal.

When Michael Finley or Manu Ginobili needs a breather, the Spurs could opt to play Jacque Vaughn or Damon Stoudamire next to Tony Parker, in a dual point-guard attack. Or, they could opt to give Matt Bonner or Robert Horry minutes at the three, which would leave one of them to chase Tayshaun Prince.

Basically, it's going to be a "all hands on deck" kind of night for the Spurs.

Another tidbit ... With Bowen's consecutive games started streak ending tonight, the NBA's new leader in that category will be in the Palace. It's Prince, who is set to start his 395th straight contest.

Spurs better bring it tonight, show some pride and solidarity, from the 1st minute of first quarter and then for all 47 mins that follow, of what should have been Bruce's 501st consecutive game.

NBA is full of a bunch no-talent mother ers and over-paid parasitic admin types.

Chauncey will be pleased not to have Bowen on him in the 4th.

They pretty much have no shot tonight, as long as they bust ass, hustle, and give a great effort, I'll be happy.

It's kinda strange that don't sign someone to a ten days contract.
Maybe it's because of a lack of time or Spurs will use all the remaining space under the tax to offer more than the min to Barry...

For one night only, Spurs fan will see a dream come true...
Spurs will have TWO long threes.

    Pretty stupid.

Even if you don't want to call up one of the Toros right now, there are several 10-day players who can play the three better than Matt Bonner and (these days) Robert Horry. They should have been on this as soon as Udoka's status was determined.

I can't believe that he got suspended. I looked at that footage over and over again and all I saw was Bruce trying to get off Paul. Absurd.

Parker is basically the only player active tonight who can guard Rip Hamilton. Neither Manu nor Finley are good at chasing players are screens. Parker on Hamilton, then you have to live with Vaughn and Stoudamire one Billups. Manu, Finley and maybe Bonner on Prince.

let's just hope Duncan goes for 40+ plus tonight, I just can't see Manu having a big game seeing he's so tired

That's the only explanation I can gather. They promised Barry the rest of the money under the luxury threshold rather than offering him the minimum.

Bruno, salary cap question -- If the Spurs use their MLE to re-sign Barry, is next year's salary based on the pro-rated to a full season amount or just the amount that Barry will receive.

I don't know, the CBA isn't clear on this point.
I'm not even sure you can pro-rated a contract sign with the MLE.

On a side note, Bowen's suspension has lowered Spurs' team salary by $18,750.
