I use Firefox, but I have to use IE for my work's bank when I do Direct Deposit. Their website works fine in Firefox for everything else, just not DD.

And what did I select in the poll? IE! D'oh!

Perhaps someone could give a slightly computer-incompetant person a quick 1-sentence synopsis why I should try FireFox over IE? Also, is it available on Mac?

It's Windows-based. Here are some browsers available for download.

Can someone explain "tabbed browsing" to me? I use IE at home and at work, because that is what I got. Except for threads like this, it never crosses my mind what browser I am using.

I pay little mind to the gasoline I pump into my truck; the batteries in my TV remote; navel lint; and, my browser.

GoN, download it and try it out. It's one of those things that you don't appreciate untill you use.

    Hence, your screen nick.

Tabbed browsing means you have several windows open in a single frame, and there are "tabs" which allow you to easily navigate back and forth.

I alternate between Opera and Firefox. I would probably use Firefox more, but I find downloads are much slower with it.

Yeah, that's what I don't get about "tabbed browsing". Why not just open a bunch of explorer windows? If you are working on a bunch of things at the same time, I'd rather just have a browser open on the bottom that I can go to when I need it with one click than to click on the Firefox browser and then have to find the right tab.

I have Firefox but I use explorer for most things. Firefox is better if you are surfing because the pages load faster, but for just doing everyday things on the internet ... explorer works well.

Firefox also has a built in pop up stopper and it can be used on a Mac. I prefer it over IE but still use IE on some things. Firefox is better in my opinion. All you have to do is go to www.mozilla.org to download it. It's free.

To me the best feature of Firefox is the ability to change the size of text to anything I want by holding CTRL and moving the mouse wheel. That feature allows me to just kick back on the couch and chill when I'm reading this forum or checking scores.

Tabbed browsing is way better than opening multiple windows imo, because you can still easily switch to other apps or other folders on the taskbar without having to wade through 20 browser windows.

Features aren't the main reason firefox is so good though... the browser is faster, uses less memory, and is just a way better design than IE. Also, it's so much more secure. Security is one of its primary concerns, and I've never had the problems with downloading spyware or having my browser hijacked by ads, search bars, and new startup pages. Conversely, IE is so full of buffer overrun holes that its impossible to use it for any extended amount of time on a high-speed connection and not get infected by nasty unless you're running some heavy duty anti-virus stuff (which I absolutely refuse to do considering how much RAM it uses and how much it slows dow a system). An OS should be secure by default, but Gates doesn't give a since he has monopoly power.

Regarding tabbed browsing ..not being able to use the alt-tab was the biggest adjustment. However it did not take long. What I like about tabbed browsing is you only have to open one window thus your system is not being taxed as much as opening an explorer window for each website. One thing I especially like is being able to assign my regular web sites to all open when I open firefox. In other words ..when I press the "Home" icon, Firefox goes to the six websites I visit on a regular basis. I guess you could say if it were a tv ..it would have the ability to have as many picture in picture channels as you want. Then just click on the one you want and it takes over the main screen.

The pop up blocker works much better than the google toolbar blocker which I thought was great before I saw Firefox's.

Firefox takes some getting used to...kinda like gmail did.

One of the main reasons I got it was the better spyware protection.
