NEW YORK (TICKER) —Federal prosecutors claim former NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on more than 100 games that he worked, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

Donaghy, 41, was fired by the NBA after pleading guilty last year to charges of wire fraud and transmitting betting information across state lines, a violation of federal law.

In a court filing, prosecutors detailed Donaghy’s betting activity that began in 2003 and continued for three seasons.

“The government’s investigation revealed that Donaghy provided picks for anywhere from 30 to 40 games for each of those three seasons,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Goldberg said in a letter filed Friday in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Donaghy is not accused of fixing games, but he is charged with passing along inside information to two gamblers. The information allegedly includes tips on which officiating crews worked particular games and how they interacted with players.

Thomas Martino, one of Donaghy’s gambling partners who pleaded guilty last month to participating in the scheme, said Donaghy received $5,000 for each correct pick.

Donaghy will be sentenced July 14 by Brooklyn Federal Judge Carol Amon and is facing a maximum of 20 years in prison.

According to the Daily News, however, he likely will receive a far more lenient sentence for cooperating with the government during its investigation.

why should there be an * on those championships? the article clearly states that Donaghy wasn't accused of fixing games; he was accused of passing on inside information about interactions between refs and players.

Interesting in how the way officials interacted with players, at least in Donaghy's mind, would be important information to gamblers. Meaning biased, both favorable and unfavorable? That in itself is a problem. This would suggest the idea of all NBA officials being fair and impartial is not exactly accurate. Not surprising, given the actions of egomanicas like Joe Crawford and the issues surrounding certain games and players.

That he bet on the games doesn't mean he was successful. And Donaghy never worked any playoff games beyond the 2nd round (he worked 1 conference semifinal game in 2004, one in 2006, and one in 2007), so I'm not sure how he really could have impacted the determination of a champion, assuming his bets were successful and placed on playoff games.

Still though, there are so many problems here as romsho says. Just the fact that he could predict how certain refs would interact with certain players shows that there is a huge problem with the league.

Stern kind of pushed this issue away during the season, but it might resurface again. I really think the NBA needs to come clear here, even if in the short term it might damage its image. I don't know how you can seriously believe that games are correctly officiated anymore or how you can believe that while betting on games Donaghy isn't accused of fixing games. Seems like splitting hair to me.

I for one want Salvatore on trial, I still want some explanation for all those fouls at the end of Game 5 in the 2006 NBA Finals.

    +1

Especially with the astonishing home record of teams this year in the playoffs, the league is going to face a growing crisis that isn't going away anytime soon.

I think it's time for instant replay challenges in the NBA like they have in the NFL. I mean, there's like 36 different camera angles to look at...surely they could ensure that critical, game-changing calls were correct.
