They've been the most dominant teams of this millenium and have face each other several times in the playoffs but I don't really see this as a ravalry. Mavs and Suns are the teams I consider as Spurs rivals, and back in the days, when the Lakers where the team to beat, Portland and Sacramento were theirs. So that's why I think Spurs-Lakers was never a true rivalry. What do you think?

there is some truth to that. Lakers/Spurs wasn't quite as heated as Lakers/Queens, or even Spurs/Mavericks.

Except the Kings never managed to beat the Lakers, not once, so that knocks it down a few pegs. The Lakers and Spurs traded blows as of late, with the Spurs denying them their fourth championship and then the Lakers then denying the Spurs a repeat.

I've never understood why the national media haven't jumped on the notion that this is truly a rivalry and, actually, the best one in the league for some time. It's far more of a rivalry, I would think, than Boston/LA is at this point. There hasn't been a lot of bad blood, but I think the fact that the teams genuinely respect each other makes the level of play that much better.

It's always either been us or you guys that's come out of the West and won it. There was a time when the WCF was the true Finals.

The problem is ppl have short memories and it's been several years since SA and LA faced off when it counted.

As opposed to Phoneyix who we play and trample just about every year. There's no rivalry there, they're crap to our caviar, but the media plays it up and so there is a 'rivalry." SA/LA back in the day was much more heated than one-year wonder Dallas or no-year wonder Phoneyix, and this could help reignite a classic rivalry between two teams that respect but don't really care for each other.

I think the only true true rivalry in NBA history was the Celtics vs. Lakers in the 80's.

But a case can be made for Spurs/LA: We closed out the Forum, they closed out the Alamodome. Spurs beat LA in 1999 (No Phil Jackson but it was still Shaq, Kobe, Horry, Fisher, and Fox, counts enough for me). Lakers got us in 2001 and 2002, we got them in 2003. They got us in 2004 on 0.4....The Lakers and Spurs are the only West teams this decade to win a championship....

It's hard to consider the current Lakers the same rivalry because they only have Kobe, Fisher, and P. Jackson from the last playoff encounter...while we still have Pop and TD, TP, Bowen, and Manu.

Yea but even when the Lakers and Spurs faced off every year in the playoffs, there wasn't as much animosity (at least among the players) as the Lakers/Suns Lakers/Kings or Spurs/Mavs Spurs/Suns.

Probably because the Lakers trounced us every year, until we beat them and they fell apart.

Has to be considered a rivalry, at least in the early 2000s.

In the span of 6 seasons, from the 1999 playofss to the 2004 playoffs, Spurs and Lakers met in the playoffs 5 times. So, either one eliminated the other in the playoffs. Moreover, in five of those 6 seasons, it was either the Spurs or the Lakers that were eventual NBA champs.

It wasn't the most heated or hateful rivalry in the NBA. But, in terms of compe ion and success of each team, it was one of the few real rivalries in recent years.

Say what? Spurs-Lakers decided the le 4 times in a span of 5 years, and it really should have been 5 of 6 if Kobe didn't go into Dirk mode in the 04 Finals.

Bull . Don't tell me there wasn't animosity when Kobe's doing reverse jams up 35 @ Staples in the 01 WCF or when Steve Smith and Danny Ferry are shooting threes to push the dagger even further up 20+ in game 6 of the 03 series.
