I know these guys can get in shape alot easier than any of us.....but it's gotta be a concern if your franchise QB doesn't even have the discipline to avoid the 300 pound mark.

"At this point, quarterback is again a concern, because no one knows if JaMarcus Russell is ready to take over the starting job. There are rumors that he's close to 300 pounds and not exactly prepared for his close-up."

He got paid 30 million already, what the does he care if he turns into a Ryan Leaf.
Apparently Jamarcus thought "Committment to Excellence" also applied when attacking a buffet line.
I would do the same thing if I were him.
if he invested the lion's share of that money wisely (and continues to do so) then the only thing he has to worry about is living down the fact that he basically stole 30 mil from Al Davis. Not the worst crime.
Jared Lorenzen is going to get pissed if JM gets any bigger.
if russell gets any bigger the linemen will ethier look small ar russell huge
what kind of off season program are the Raiders running that would even allow such a thing to happen? I know teams can only do so much to force a player to show up in the off season to adhere to a program but 300 f-cking pounds?
Already been debunked, sorry to spoil your fun.
It turns out the Sports Illustrated writer's friend of a friend of a friend who heard a rumor isn't a good source.

"Never before has the weight of an NFL quarterback created so much controversy.
Don Banks of SI.com stirred up a hornets’ nest on Sunday by floating a rumor, with which we then foolishly ran, that Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been loading up on the Russell-Stovers, to the point where he was pushing 300 pounds.
We then heard from a league source that Russell is actually south of 275. On Wednesday, John Clayton of ESPN.com reported on his Insider blog that Russell recently weighed himself at 272 pounds. And in the closing moments of SportsCenter, Steve Levy said that Chris Mortensen is reporting that Russell weighs 278.
Regardless of whether it’s 272 or 278, the reality is that Russell’s listed weight is 255. And though Clayton says that whether Russell has gone flabby is “hard to tell with his massive 6-foot-6 frame,” keep in mind that Russell weighed only 265 pounds at the 2007 Scouting Combine — but arguably needed a little support in the upper body region. With thirteen more pounds, the likelihood of jiggling is significant."
272 is still unacceptably overweight, even for a guy as big as Russell.
He will easily be 300lbs in a couple of seasons.
If he's really around 270-275 I don't see the big deal. He played at about 265 in college.
I think the Raiders want him at a max of 260, preferably 255.
Last year, his combine weight was 265. Raiders may very well rather have him around 255-260, but they knew he was a big boy when they drafted him.
And spoke of getting him into better shape though.
I don't mean to be trashing the guy. I haven't a clue what he can do.
But I would be alarmed.
Yeah. Unless I am mistaken I could have sworn they wanted him to lose 15 by May.
I could be wrong but I could have sworn I read that on MMQB.
Dude likes to hit up the buffet line. Chill.
The whole reason Russell couldn't even play most of the season was because he wasn't at the weight the Raiders wanted him at. They dangled the "starter" carrot in front of him and he still didn't have the discipline to make weight, it took him another month before he finally got onto the field, and I think that was only because Kiffin finally capitulated and let him play overweight.
It's really not a matter of weight with me. Pro athletes can gain/lose weight as needed really easy. Russell can easily lose whatever weight he needs to. Part of his advantage as a QB is his massive size, anyways.
It's about discipline and dedication, and right now it's looking like Russell doesn't have much of either.
