No surprise: Spurs' Ginobili to play in Beijing
Mike Monroe
Confirming what the Spurs have felt certain would be the case, the Argentine Olympic Committee on Friday named Manu Ginobili one of the 12 players who will try to defend the basketball le Argentina captured in 2004.
Ginobili injured his left ankle early in the Spurs’ playoff run, jamming it badly during the first-round series against the Phoenix Suns. He had assured the Spurs he would only play in the Olympic basketball tournament, scheduled to begin Aug. 10 in Beijing, if he no longer experienced pain and swelling in the ankle.
Since returning to Argentina early this month, Ginobili has kept in daily contact with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, assuring him he has had “zero pain” in the ankle, which the Spurs re-examined on June 19.
The Associated Press reported that Ginobili has been playing more, without incident, in Team Argentina practices.
“I had been playing more the last few days and it had improved,” he told the wire service. “It feels great, and that makes me very happy.”
The members of the team were announced after a 92-74 victory over Mexico in an exhibition in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Neither Ginobili nor Spurs center Fabricio Oberto, who has been bothered by a sore calf, played in the game.
Oberto, the starting center on the gold medal winning team in Athens, is also on the Argentine roster.
Argentina opens Olympic play against Lithuania. Also in Group A are Australia, Iran and Russia, along with one of three teams advancing from a qualifying tournament in Athens, Greece.

Gold Medal defending champions.
if Yao Ming made himself available for this Beijing Olympics, I won't be surprised if Manu chose to play too. This is just a perfect opportunity for him. In the next Olympics. Manu will be older and slower, I think Manu will probably beg off, win or lose on this one.
good luck to the U.S. & Argentina teams.
Not the same article. This one is the confirmation of what they knew was coming then.![]()
ok
cool
but people now can see the other one
We need to send Spurschick over to kidnap Manu long enough to miss the games so he can be rested for the upcoming season.![]()
who in the made you the forum security guard? stfu already.... damn..
Manu is dumb.
Shouldn't you be making another "Hill is horrible", thread or something?
I hope he is 100%. His intensity as a compe or worries me, to the point where I wonder if he would be completely forthcoming about the injury. I wish him the best. Come back healthy Manu, we need you.
Wish he wasn't playing but whatever...
I wish Manu luck. Hopefully his minutes will be limited. Our season rides on his ankle.
I'd rather have him rest and get fully healed for next season but I understand that the pressure he has to represent his country which is admirable so I hope he does well and comes back healthy. By the way when did Manu become a friend of Kobe's.

Well, I think Kobe always speaks highly of Manu. At one point, Kobe said that Manu is his favorite player to watch. As much as I dislike Kobe, he does give Manu props in his interviews and on the court too. And in their interaction on the court, I think you can see that both players respect each other a lot.
Two teams to watch this olympics, Team Argentina and Team Italia. And since when did Kaman become German?

I thought Argentina qualified for the Olimpics.
While I agree in principle, I'm not sure if that solution would have him rested...
