I'd like to know why one of the brightest young coaches in America hasn't already signed on to coach another team when Vinny Freaking Del Negro gets to coach the Bulls this year.

    WTF?!

Because it's rumored that he treated his Mav players like - Sloan and Larry Brown are the only guys with enough credit to coach that way. Plus, based on this past playoffs, it became pretty apparent that he doesn't know what he's doing. I too, would rather have an unknown quan y than a proven failure.

He took over an elite team in Dallas and he made them better. That said, he did a TERRIBLE job his last calendar year on the job, he was horribly outcoached by Riley and Nellie in those two series, and it was obvious to most observers that the Mavericks were not a well-coached team this past season. Some of that is on Avery for being stubborn and grinding down on his players, and some of that is on the players, cough Josh Howard cough, for not being professionals.

Most coaching vacancies get filled with somebody who is the opposite of the guy who got fired. Avery is a martinet type. That isn't going to fly in Chicago after Skiles. There's no way Dirk gave Nash a glowing recommendation on Avery, so he wouldn't be going to Phoenix. The Knicks would've probably been a good fit for Avery, that's a team that needs an ass-chewer and a disciplinarian, but they went with Coach Pornstache instead, probably because they want to sell tickets and play a more exciting style since they're not going to be any good any time soon.

    That just leaves Detroit, right?

I have to disagree with the playoffs part I think it was that dumb ass Jason Kidd trade they had enough talent without him,They lost 2 key good bench/role players Devin Harris And Diop. For what a dried up Jason Kidd? That was a bad trade and that crushed the mav's chances of winning a championship that year and I really don't see Rick Carlyisle doing much good but improving record, He does not have a good playoff record at all. Also I think the jazz managment is bad why do they keep Jerry Sloan? He has only taken them to finals once and they lost, They have enough tallent to win a championship but they need a coach like AJ who has a more balanced philosiphy then Sloan. Sloans coaching is basicly to bruise the other team's star players up ex T Mac and Kobe.

AJ Imo should just join Popovich's coaching staff and he should be groomed and learn a lot from popovich and thus he would take over the spurs when greg retires.

I think the A.J. fans win this round with their sensibility and factual support.

I'd agree the trade was stupid. I'd also say though that AJ refused to install any motion on offense and his subs ution patters were ed. The trade didn't help him, but it isn't like he did a great job of adapting. Plus, he DID treat his players like which a second year coach just can't do. They'll tune you out, rightfully so, and that's exactly what happened to Avery Johnson.

As far as Sloan goes- yes, part of his philosophy is to play physical. It's laughable to suggest that's the entirety of his vision though (and BTW he took us to the Finals twice, where we lost to MJ and a no-call pushoff in 98' and MJ plus some consistantly bad refs in 97) . He coaches precision and execution, which if done right, is near unstoppable. The problem is we got this coward -head named Carlos Boozer who chooses not to perform.

However, we've basically run 14 plays for the past 20 years out of flex and UCLA sets that if executed correctly are incredibly hard to stop. I like it because our success or failure is usually entirely dependant on ourselves rather than the defense. In other words- win or lose it's us and our execution that dictates the outcome. Like I said though, there's a certain PF playing for us who gets scared, plays with finesse and chooses to dictate that we lose.

My beef with Sloan is this- longevity. He's a good coach who's had very few bad years, but I wouldn't mind seeing him go just on general principle. He has too much influence within the organization and is almost free to run it and choose who we pick up as if he were a college coach. Lots of role players resent him and they know management will never side with them when disputes arise. In the past and in the future it has and will lead to problems. I also think that his longevity protects him from criticism and although he doesn't deserve to be fired, if he ever did, I think our two decade long commitment to him would prevent it from happening.

All in all though, Sloan is a great coach and outside of Pop, Phil Jackson and Larry Brown there isn't another coach in the league who is as good at their job as Sloan is at his.

NY is just trying to win some games. I wouldn't be surprised if they win 40+ games this coming season - that's all they need now and they picked the right coach to do so. They won't be winning any championships but will stop being the worst team in the league. That's Memphis and Minnesota's honor.
