Report: Orioles deal Tejada to Astros for five players
Dec. 12, 2007
CBSSports.com staff and wire reports
The wait is finally over.
The Baltimore Orioles pulled the trigger on a long-awaited deal, sending shortstop Miguel Tejada to Houston in exchange for five players, according to the Baltimore Sun . The O's receive outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Safarte and third baseman Michael Costanzo.
Tejada's stay in Baltmore ends after four seasons, with the team going 291-357 during the span. Tejada hit .296 with 18 homers in 2007, and also saw his consecutive games played streak end at 1,152 on June 22.

From CBS Sports MLB:
Tejada goes to a great hitter's park in Houston and will remain one of the top 5-10 Fantasy shortstops because of his rare run production at the position. The drop in his stock might have just as much to do with the new stars at the shortstop position as it does with the regression of his own talents. He did miss almost all of July with a fractured wrist -- causing him to fall short of 600 at-bats for the first time since 1999 -- but he showed off the power he still has remaining by launching 10 of his 18 homers upon his return in August. Tejada, who turns 32 in May, doesn't make for as flashy a Fantasy pick as he once did as his career has clearly entered its decline, and his shortage of walks will forever send sabermetricians into hysterics. But he will still prove an asset to the Fantasy team that selects him -- possibly even a steal if he lasts into the middle rounds.
Typical Astros move.
I guess this will be hailed as the move that gets them back into contention. This line won't work for veteran Astros fans, we've seen it before; a band aid to cover up another .500 season. IMO.

Well at least Wade is trying to make some changes, I give him major props on that.
so long adam everrett..
I haven't heard much about these guys but thats good to hear. Tejada WILL put up big numbers for you guys though. He just got tired of playing here and who could blame him to be honest. I think Patton could be a starter in the OF though for us.
Or Wiggington. Tejada can shift to third. It would make no sense to improve defensively with Bourn and Matsui, only to plug Tejada's decreasing range in at SS.
You mean Scott hahahaha, Patton is a pitcher. Yeah we tried to get him last year but that fell through. I guess we will prob try to package Everett and Burke next.
We could prob get something decent for Wiggington and Burke packaged together.
I expect Wade is banking on that, something in the way of a starting pitcher would be nice, though I doubt they'll get the #2 guy that's needed. I think they'll stay in-house to fill the closer role.
Yeah if we could find another starter that would be pretty much all we are going to do for the rest of the season. With Blum and Loretta backing up our infield, there is no need to keep Burke around.
Yeah I got the two mixed up....![]()
Everett's being released as a free-agent. They're getting nothing for him. There went their defense.
Well, I was wrong - they're releasing Everett tomorrow, making him a FA. Um, this makes no sense - you got Matsui and Bourn to beef up your defense, and you're not guaranteed decent OBP's from either (especially Matsui) at the top of the order. Then you put Tejada at SS, his defensive range getting worse every year, weakening an already weak starting pitching rotation that needs help from a good SS who can turn plays. I mean, the line-up is great 1-6, but if the starting pitching gives up a ton of runs in that rinky-dink park, what's the use?
where did you see that?
To be honest, you probably sold high on both Patton and Albers. Their peripheral minor league stats don't point to being top of the rotation pitchers in the big leagues.
That said, to get two guys (along with a quality platoon OF) who BA had rated as the top 2 pitching prospects (#2 & #3 overall behind Pence) in the Astros' organization at the beginning of last year for a disgruntled Tejada coming off a down year is a decent move by MacPhail.
Patton and Albers were also top 80 prospects in all of baseball according to BA in 2007.
I like this deal better than the Santana/Aybar package that was offered by the Angels in 2006, and I like it a of a lot more than the Everett/Burke package that was being rumored on the Oriole board last week (I wouldn't trade my dirty socks for either of them).
Actually Tejada dropped some weight and was improved in the field last season. His 'Fielding Bible' rating was about middle of the pack - well ahead of Derek Jeter (not to insinuate that says a lot).
It's funny both fanbases feel they got kinda screwed....

I wouldn't worry about the Sun message board, it's just a bunch of crazies. A better representation of the fan base is orioleshangout.com
A few of them are no need to mention names. But some of those guys over there are alright. I will have to check out the orioleshangout one.
LOL well both sides are pretty much against this trade. I for one am not against it. We won't know until the season starts who got the better of the two. I like Tejada in the lineup and yeah Patton wasn't at the caliber of a MLB starter just yet.
I'm not sure they like it any more over there. (Actually, judging by the thread, they DID like the trade until one of the board insiders announced that he didn't like it, then everybody swinging from his nuts joined in tune.)
Personally, I don't think it's a bad deal. Scott will likely be packaged in another deal. If not, he'll likely put up equal numbers to Miggy next year (albeit in a less valuable way as an OF compared to a SS).
Hopefully, 1 of Patton/Albers develops into a middle rotation starter.
Costanza is listed as the top power prospect in the Astros system. And if he doesn't work out, you just move him into the front office as the assistant to the traveling secretary. SERENITY NOW
Like I said, I expect Miggy to put up solid numbers for you guys. Just not sure defensely how's he's going to be able to contribute.
Hopefully our guys can help you NOT get 30+ runs scored on you hahahahahaha
