That’s actually entirely the point. The idea is that the spurs should have signed Kawhi to anything and the reason is nets did that for Durant. But if Durant, like almost all players before him, does not come back and be a max worthy player, it will highlight why the spurs should not have done the same for Kawhi.
Besides, you are talking about the spurs misdiagnosing Kawhi, so Kawhi really does have a degenerative issue where he couldn’t play for a year and a half BEFORE it started degenerating. So why would the spurs pay max to a player in such a condition?
