French Senate approves vaccine pass despite protests; German politicians divided

Despite growing protests, French lawmakers have moved a step closer to passing a bill that would introduce obligatory coronavirus vaccinations for certain professions and condition access to cultural and leisure spaces, as well as travel, on a health pass showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

The French Senate late Saturday approved the bill but introduced changes to the government's draft to exempt minors and remove restaurant and cafe terraces from places requiring the new passe sanitaire. Senators also tabled an amendment to postpone implementation of the new rules to September, instead of August. The law now needs final approval from the lower house of parliament.

Ahead of the Senate vote, more than 160,000 people protested across France against the proposed restrictions, up by some 50,000 on demonstrations last weekend. Around 35 percent of French citizens support such protests according to a new poll.

That's significantly lower than backing at the start of other recent-anti-government protest movements, such as the so called Yellow Jackets who rose up against fuel price hikes in 2018. Many Yellow Jackets have joined demonstrations against the health pass.

The protesters denounced what they call a "sanitary dictatorship" and claim the health passes violate individual freedom.

France's government has been keeping a watchful eye on the protest movement, fearing a new social crisis over the summer and into the autumn since the demonstrations have managed to attract sizeable crowds despite the summer vacation. After last week's protests, the government made several concessions, including lowering fines for noncompliance, pushing back deadlines and changing rules for shopping malls.

Knoxville's ICU capacity will be tested soon if the trend doesn't change.

Chief symptoms for Delta are somewhat different than Alpha. Current CDC guidance is to seek testing for COVID for any upper respiratory symptom, regardless of vaccination status.

“They have runny noses, congestion, whereas when the pandemic started, a lot of people had cough. Don’t be confused about what those symptoms look like. If you think it may just be a head cold, it could be worthwhile to get tested,” she added.

Hospitalizations due to COVID have doubled in the last two weeks.

As of Saturday, Texas Department of State Health Services data reported 4,320 lab-confirmed COVID hospitalizations in the state, more than three times the cases it had at its low of 1,428 less than a month ago. In the span of one week, COVID hospitalizations had ed nearly 50 percent.

The increases in COVID hospitalizations have been dramatic. In the week ending July 24, Texas averaged 3,710 people hospitalized with COVID, up from 2,537 in the week before and 1,838 in the week before that.

Texas Medical Center hospitals are seeing an influx of COVID patients in ICU beds, and medical leaders may soon consider postponing elective procedures, said Dr. James McDeavitt, executive vice president and dean of clinical affairs at Baylor College of Medicine.

The current crop of vaccines do not provide sterilizing immunity and, as the emergence of Delta has shown just a few months after the start of mass vaccination, the protection conferred may not be long lasting.

Along with SnakeBoy, I'm hoping we'll see live attentuated vaccines soon. The immune system gets exposed to all the surface proteins, not just the e, and the protection lasts much longer.

This would be preferable, but if you really want to scare the out of people who are already ignorant, tell them the vaccine is a LIVE attenuated virus.

Also it must be noted most of the cases involving vaccinated people coming down with symptoms put themselves in situations where they were likely to get a large "dose" of virus. If you actually wanted an infection with symptoms after being vaccinated, you would put yourself in a small room with lots of people shedding live virus for a good period of time.. This appears to be the case in severe infections of vaccinated people. There are also some wtf severe reinfections, but with people having varying immune responses, its not surprising. Also some of the infections after vaccinations were people with already compromised immune systems. If I were a cancer survivor who had chemo and or radiation, and was vaccinated, I would absolutely be masking up in all situations around a lot of people inside coming and going with poor ventilation.

I have a feeling the masking on airplanes and airports is here to stay for a good while.

Again, thanks to our unvaccinated holdouts for knowing exactly how to produce a more virulent strain through evolution through "natural" selection. You suck. Our current vaccines did and are doing amazing things, a significant number of people vectors, did not.

DeSantis cancelled FL COVID restrictions in early May and forbid cities and counties to reimplement them. Businesses in FL can still require masks and social distancing.

It was not one person. The delta variant is not only in India.
And the way it spreads IN THE US is through the unvaccinated.
And you, personally, will be fine so no worries. Good luck on that vacation to Canada.

If Trump were president we could just attempt to hide cases, shut off any CDC number keeping.
Put a Trump Nazi in every hospital and just burn the records.
I mean this is now on Joe correct? Why is he actually admitting to a problem...?
What happened to "poof its gone" one day, that worked with the derpals.

Remember when you said healthy teenagers don't need to get vaccinated?

If that's still your thought process then you don't really understand how we get to herd immunity

He's part of the 40% that are consistently wrong but too stubborn to admit it, which results in nothing changing.

    These people are a scourge.

Ironic that the epidemic of Republican stupidity is proving just as dangerous as the virus.

Thankfully it is just killing mostly among mouth-breathing Trump voters.
