Schools are getting desperate — and creative — in tackling a nationwide bus driver shortage, Axios' Neal Rothschild reports.
- A charter school in Wilmington, Delaware, is offering parents $700 to get their kids to and from school for the year.
- A poll released by several school trade associations this week shows the shortage is the No. 1 problem for 65% of school transportation administrators.
51% call the situation "severe" or "desperate." The school district in Rochester, New York, says "all options are being considered."
What's going on: The Great Resignation sweeping the country is compounded by an aged busing workforce.
- Half of bus drivers are 65+ and so are more vulnerable to COVID-19, Joanna McFarland, CEO of school ride-service company HopSkipDrive, told AP.
- A Montana school district offered $4,000 bonuses and invited residents to test-drive buses.
- Pittsburgh Public Schools' driver shortage delayed the return to classrooms by two weeks, The Washington Post reports.

An Arizona father who stormed into a school with zip-tie handcuffs after the principal told his kid to wear a mask has been arrested.
Rishi Rambaran, 40, stormed into Principal Diane Vargo's office on Thursday with zip-tie handcuffs, according to a since-removed Instagram video. He and two friends accompanying him claimed the school broke the law when administrative officials told his kid to wear a mask and quarantine after potential exposure to COVID-19.
Kelly Walker, one of the men who backed up Rambaran, shared a video to Instagram that appeared to show him driving to the school.
"I'm headed to Mesquite Elementary School right now, where a friend just notified me and some others that his son was indiscriminately taken to the office to be quarantined because supposedly someone had decided he but not other kids in this classroom were exposed to COVID," he said.
"And they shoved a mask on his face, wouldn't let him call his parents, and now his dad is there," he continued. "The school is blatantly breaking the law, blatantly going against the will of the people. I think this community has expressed that they're not going to have this kind of bullying of our kids, these kinds of scare tactics."

“The fact is, the state is planning that more people are going to die of COVID. So much so that they anticipate local hospitals across the state are not going to be able to handle the amount of death they are going to see,” said Nirenberg.
Eight counties across the state are using refrigerated trucks to store the bodies of the dead. Bell County which includes Temple, Texas, has requested a second FEMA trailer with an extra storage capacity of 50 bodies. Several smaller trailers have been donated by the state funeral directors association.
