Texas Railroad Commission needs ethics reform
When it comes to oil and gas, however, Texas regulators are especially close to the industries they are supposed to oversee.
This is especially true for the Railroad Commission of Texas, a 130-year-old state agency that — despite its name —
oversees oil and gas development, coal and uranium mining, and natural gas utility service.
The Railroad Commission is supposed to manage natural resources, and guard personal and community safety.
But too often, the commission focuses on speeding up oil and gas development at the expense of safety, the economy and the environment.
the financial interests and campaign contributions of the three current railroad commissioners.
Examples include cases in which
weak recusal rules allowed commissioners to participate in cases involving significant campaign contributors and companies in which they had personal financial stakes.
commissioners are allowed to take campaign contributions throughout their six-year terms,
except during the legislative session.
Commissioners can keep stakes in oil and gas en ies that do business with the agency,
presenting at least the appearance of a conflict of interest.
Communities across our state suffer from pollution and health impacts from oil and gas development, and
they can’t trust that the commission always has their best interests in mind.
why the Railroad Commission didn’t require companies to winterize the gas supply chain 10 years ago.

Texas Senate gives initial OK to congressional lines without new Hispanic district in D-FW
The Texas Senate gave initial approval to new congressional boundaries Friday that
solidify the Republican majority in the state’s House delegation,
but fails to expand the clout of minority voters who powered the Lone Star State’s population surge.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is denied a new district under the Senate’s map, even though the area’s growth outpaced most of Texas.

A Migrant Appears to Have Been Lynched in South Texas
The incident serves as a reminder that over the past two centuries, hundreds of migrants and Texans of Mexican descent have been murdered.
Border Patrol agents late last week spotted a badly decomposing body in a patch of trees
this one was hanging from a noose that had been fashioned from the remains of a shirt and was tied to a limb on a rugged old oak tree. His head lolled to one side, and his feet were missing, perhaps eaten by coyotes or other animals.
it’s impossible to know the exact number of lynchings that have taken place in Texas, but they have occurred since the days of the Republic of Texas.
Some historians estimate there have been over seven hundred lynchings in the state—and perhaps countless more—with hundreds targeting Mexicans or Texans of Mexican heritage.

No one said they were racist because of that.
The optics are bad.
Although, being old white republicans the odds are fairly good at least one of them is a racist, tbh.
Amendments 9, 15, 19, and 24.
Voting rights have had to be explicitly and implicitly laid out more than once.
Almost as if it is important.
TX Bans Local Nurses From Quitting To Work FEMA Crisis Contracts in State

This is mandated from the state of Texas.

CPS Energy ratepayers on hook for $450 million in winter storm costs - so far
CPS Energy customers are on the hook for $450 million in charges stemming from the deadly February winter storm, which they’ll be paying off over the next 25 years.
That’s how much of its more than $1 billion in storm-related bills the city-owned utility has paid so far.
Before the end of the year, the utility is expected to ask its five-member board of trustees and City Council to approve a rate hike of about 10 percent, which would go into effect in early 2022.
CPS is still fighting another $585 million in bills from the storm in state court,
accusing more than a dozen natural gas suppliers of price-gouging during the storm.
It’s not clear what the impact to ratepayers’ bills will be if the utility loses or settles its lawsuits.

Moroccan man gets lost, parks his car, white Texan shoots him dead and walks free
Dghoughi, an unarmed Moroccan citizen living in the U.S., was shot and killed by a Texas resident in an unprovoked attack on Oct. 11.
According to Morocco World News,
Dghoughi was shot by 65-year-old Terry Turner
for sitting in a parked car near Turner’s residence
in Martindale, Texas, a small town about 40 miles from Austin.
the shooter being friends with local police,
but also cites Texas’ “no duty retreat” law.
“these laws are associated with an increase in homicides” and disproportionately impact people of color. Additionally, the report found that these laws
“encourage impulsive and illegitimate uses of deadly force” in situations that could have otherwise been prevented.
