Well they could have signed Forbes for 1/4 the value and 85 mil less guaranteed.
I don’t know what you are arguing.

^ He does NOTHING else out there, he can barely box out. He is a spectator begging for the ball.

His value is floor spacing and a quick trigger finger. Perfect bench guy for a winning team.

I have to say Doug is a streaky shooter and could drift sometimes. It’s probably wise to reduce his minutes, and maximize his efficiency out there. Maybe start but give more minutes to Lonnie around 26 total minutes.

that'd be great if that was with us.

we always had that streaky shooter that was a terrible defender/rebounder on our championship teams.
Marco Belinelli, Michael Finley, Brent Barry, Steve Kerr

but like you said, they worked cause there were great players around them.
So we already have the streaky shooter, now we just need the championship team to form around him lol

Agreed. He'd be a great piece on a winning team. He's fine in his role, but probably asked to do too much right now.

    projectspurs.com/doug-mcdermott…

AT&T CENTER – The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday forward Doug McDermott is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a grade three right ankle sprain.

After McDermott underwent an MRI examination, the results confirmed the injury. McDermott has now begun a rehabilitation program for the injury.
The Spurs have 13 regular season games remaining. They’re currently 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for 9th out West and 2 games behind the New Orleans Pelicans for 10th.

Finishing 9th or 10th gives a team the opportunity to play in the play-in tournament to try to become a playoff team.
With McDermott out, the Spurs have been starting even smaller with Josh Richardson joining the starting group of Dejounte Murray, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jakob Poeltl.
In 62 possessions, the new starting five are outscoring opponents by 3.2 points per 100 possessions per CleaningTheGlass.com.
If McDermott does miss the remainder of the season, he’ll finish his first season as a Spur being one of the most efficient shooters on the team. McDermott has played in 51 games, averaging 24 minutes, 11.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He’s shooting 46% from the floor, 42% from three, and 78% from the free throw line.

The Spurs signed McDermott last summer to a three year deal. He’s earning $13.7 million this season and will earn $13.7 million in each of the next two seasons.

    Our second highest paid player.

Am I the only one on this board who has been underwhelmed with his first season as a Spur?

Doug's play has been fine, the team's roster construction just makes no sense with him and KJ as the starting forwards.

I like Dougie, he just needs to be on a contender tbh I think Josh Richardson has looked more impactful in the SL too

I’m sure a contender, over the cap will happily take him and maybe we get a second and some dead money in return. That’s all he is worth right now.

hes played about as well as i could have expected, but i still dont think the volume justifies his pay/role. ive said all year that he needs to be among the league leaders in 3PA to be worth it. didnt like the signing but they also havent exactly made lemonade with it

42% from deep on 5 attempts per game in a starting role is his only value add. Sure he moves well without the ball but he is a BAD defender, who can barely box out. He offers nothing else other than efficient 3 pt shooting on low volume. Get that to 9-10 attempts a game and he starts to make sense as a starter and the second highest paid player on the team.

He also has been out every 3rd game. This team has far worse problems but Doug McDermott at 3yrs 42mm is easily
    our worst contract.

I like Doug, but he’s a terrible fit with Keldon in the SL. While Keldon himself, can play that spacer role with his new found shooting if they decided to go that way. It’s a cliche, but McBuckets could be great with a contender with his knockdown shooting, one of the highest in the league. So I doubt that they would have a problem moving him if they decided to. I honestly think we’ve seen the last of him. I think the Spurs should get size PF and move Keldon to SF. Keldon is a willing defender and would work hard to get better.

He did what he was signed to do, the early season SL was middle of the pack on offense even with KJ shooting 25% at the start of the year and DW shooting 30%. But now numbers show Richardson is a better fit with the SL since we don't have DW covering his bad defense. Doug might be a bench player next season with another wing starting ( Josh or Josh or the first rounder ).

^hard to pay 14mil per year for a bench player. If McD is not a good fit, trade or package him, get assets back and move on. Spurs have 4 picks coming if they use all that need spot.

McD is getting you assets back. If he has a nice start to next season MAYBE you get an asset and an expiring. Otherwise he probably costs a 2nd or two to dump or is salary filler in a larger trade this summer.

We’re probably stuck with him, but at least the lesson should be to not bring in anymore worst in the league defenders. , we can get that from Lonnie at a reduced rate!

Truth be told though, the Spurs aren't "stuck" with McD. He's a positive asset to most contenders (not this season with the injury ofc, but next season? Surely, especially with one year off his contract already). I think it's much more likely that the Spurs, for some reason (probably Pop's fixation on the idea that spacing must be given by terrible defenders), don't want to move on from him, than it is that they have to shed assets to trade him out. I can see many teams, like MWK, calling Wright's number next off-season or trade deadline.

He needs more gravity than anyone on this team can provide. It’s too easy to chase him off his shots on this team.

dont know what kind of value he'd have with 2 years left on his deal. if he was expiring, sure. i think we're stuck with him for at least a year
