I think Russia is entering a phase where they are tired of using people; Russia can easily bomb and missile cities to soften them up and then move in. As the destruction becomes more random, hopefully the rest of the world cracks down even further and maybe causes Putin into talking seriously. I hope.

Long term, sure. But I don't think Russia wants this invasion to go too long. Right now I feel they're just trying to get some leverage for "negotiations".

Realistically, taking the East and South gives them the "buffer" they said they want (including more or less full control of the Black Sea), and so it's not surprising that's where their strongest attacks are happening.

I think in the beginning they thought Kiev would lay down and then Ukraine would without much fighting.
Just roll in enough tanks and have planes flying and its over. Crimea like.

Hopefully your scenario is now the default although if they dont hurt the Ukrainians seriously enough there will be no long lasting peace.
If the Ukrainian military remains intact and is armed further by NATO... further conflicts.

If they control Black Sea access and the East, they essentially control Ukraine's economy and solve their security concerns, so that makes sense. That's why I thought the troops in Belarus were just to freeze the Ukrainian military in the North. With Belarus troops coming in now it sure looks like he's going for the whole enchilada. You may be right though, it's hard to think in Russian because they are re ed drunks.

The White House is actively discussing sending Vice President Harris to Warsaw, Poland, and Bucharest, Romania, in the coming days to show solidarity with Ukraine as it faces an escalating Russian invasion, sources familiar with the conversations tell The Hill.

The discussions involve sending Harris to visit troops stationed in Romania and potentially to the border with Ukraine, where a refugee crisis has seen more than 1 million people flee that country since the Russian attack.

The trip could happen in the coming weeks, one source said, adding that there is no active dialogue about sending President Biden to the region.

"A presidential visit is a heavier logistical lift," the source said. "The vice president has a smaller footprint and is historically more nimble."
