Putin simply hasn't committed enough foot soldiers to protect his mechanized army. The Ukrainians will be able to pick them apart. Two guys can take out a tank or missile battery from a mile away with the modern hardware available. They can just keep nibbling away at them day by day and eventually putin will have to throw tens of thousand more troops into play or give up. Obviously he can bomb the out of the civilians but you can't occupy a country with air power.

And even if he takes over, how many soldiers do you need to commit to that region to hold it in the long run? I honestly think he thought he'll be celebrated as a liberator or something. He was so painfully wrong.

You are correct and I believe that in the end NATO and Ukraine will give him that - I don't think people understand the refugee crisis is going to devastate Europe, and someone is going to have to pay to build Ukraine from scratch. This won't happen in a week or a month but it will eventually happen. In the end each country of NATO will be looking out for themselves they are all ready fractures, more will come as the economy of each country collapses

I will disagree and say it will only make NATO stronger than it was.
There were already fractures, and it was never a perfect arrangement, especially on rules about throwing members out (Turkey)
NATO existed in a weak form because Russia was not provoactive and there was no reason for NATO.
Now there is clearly a reason. The Balkans will tell you this first. Then Poland.
