    Damir Markota| Forward
    Height:6-11 Weight:225
    Hometown:Bosnia Profile
    Profile

    2006 NBA Draft
    Scouting Report

    Player: Damir Markota
    Round Selected: 2
    Overall Pick: 59
    Team: San Antonio Spurs

Strengths: Markota is a perimeter-oriented power forward with a good shooting touch and a decent physical set. He’s very athletic for his size, particularly regarding his footspeed and leaping ability. Offensively, Markota’s only reliable tool is his jumper. His mechanics are somewhat ugly, but he gets good enough elevation to get his shot off even with a defender in his face.

Weaknesses: While his improvement over the past year has been very encouraging, Markota is still a few years away from making any kind of contribution at the NBA level. His wingspan is very poor, appearing to be shorter than his height, which limits his shot-blocking, rebounding and defensive potential tremendously. He also lacks strength. Defensively, he has his moments but all in all will struggle in his first few years in the NBA.

Outlook: Markota will be playing in the Croatian playoffs until deep into June, which hurts his chances of coming to the States to show how much he’s improved since he declared in 2004. He’s a likely second round pick who could very well pull his name out of the draft and try again next year should he not like what he’s hearing. He does not have a buyout clause in his contract.

Anyone surprised by that pick (or wondering why Markota just happened to be at the Draft) hasn't been paying very close attention.
The Spurs sure are ballsy, huh?

    Pistons get Will Blalock

Strengths: Blalock is a deceptively strong, athletic point guard with a massive wingspan for someone his size. He’s a true point guard with strong ball-handling and passing skills. Blalock has a quick first step and does well in the lane, especially excelling on the drive-and-dish, where he uses his good court vision and passing to exploit defensive seams. He can take the ball to the basket or pull-up in the lane. Blalock runs the break just as well as he does a halfcourt set, making good decisions and getting the ball to the open man. Blalock is a scrappy defender who uses his length and good hands to harass his opponent.

Weaknesses: Blalock’s biggest weakness is his outside jumper. He is an adequate shooter from behind the arc, but lacks consistency and has not shown NBA range. Blalock struggled from the free-throw line in his junior year, shooting only 66 percent. Defensively, his team exclusively played zone defense, so it’s tough to assess how he’d adjust to playing man-to-man. He’s slightly undersized, though has the length to partially make up for it.

Outlook: Blalock, a junior, was a three-year starter at point guard for Iowa State, and improved each year. He could be drafted towards the end of the second round, and has a good enough combination of skill and physical attributes to be a good backup point guard in the NBA.

    He's small, But I like him @ #60

Markota was one of only 5 players remaining undrafted on my List of 30 6'8" or taller prospects.

Lots of size in this draft...but who can really play?
