They got invaded by another country and are fighting for their independence from said invaders. What is white washed and generic about that?
Clearly it's their opinion right now that death is preferable to Russian rule.
Of course they're worse of, measurably so. The Russian economy has been declining steadily in the past 5 years (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-po...oday-different), but still roughly half of them considered themselves middle-class.
The implosion of the ruble, the lack of liquidity to backstop it, and the fact that Russia produces very little on it's own (half their exports are oil), means this is not sustainable in the long term unless they're planning to starve their people to death, which is also never a good prospect.
Their economy, which was not big to begin with, is going to shrink considerably. The oligarchs have also taken a sizeable hit, and truth be told, a change of regime in Russia would just be a good business decision for them.
It also goes to the war. Except for fuel and few other things that they produce, how long can they realistically burn through tanks, ammo, missiles, troops, camps, all the logistics involved, etc? Most of the newer weapons have tons of electronics, which they don't produce either.
If you're former military, you're probably familiar with the term "culminating point". Russia is there, or very nearly there. All this bombing and is to gain leverage in the negotiating table, but if you didn't meet your objectives, that leverage doesn't really exist.
