So, when is the US/NATO going to just admit it's fighting a proxy war? Wouldn't put it past Putin to just get fed up at some point and detonate a nuke. Maybe 2022 will go out with a bang and the Mayans were just a decade off.
I mean, do they really need to admit the obvious? I know Putler is an idiot, but I think that’s pretty clear even to him.

It's debatable whether it's a proxy war or not, but even if it is then it's a defensive one. If Russia stops fighting the war ends without any change to its sovereignty or territorial integrity. If Ukraine stops fighting then there is no more Ukraine.

What they really need is Leopard tanks and more PATRIOTs.
Tanks win you battles, trucks win you the war.

They are ashamed of losing to people that took credit for this.

Article on low yield nukes. More likely to see this before strategic weapons.

What should the response be for something like this though? A massive response with conventional weapons? An assassination attempt on the leadership of the aggressor? How far do you go to stop a madman? Even with these types of nukes, it still seems like it could escalate quickly.

Yes, it would escalate very quickly and that may be main reason why nukes will not be used.

Wipe ‘‘em out of Ukraine with conventional weapons. A few sorties should be enough to produce devastating damage given the little amount of occupied land and the fact that NATO monitors Russian troops movements in real time.

Based on mutually assured destruction, no one is going to be the guy to initiate that level of escalation. Better would be for Putin to fake an ankle sprain and sit out the rest of the conflict, while some patsy falls on his sword and recalls the troops while "he's in charge".

Russian politician who criticised Putin found dead after mysterious 'fall from window'

Russia's 'highest-earning elected politician' who had criticised Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as “terror” has been found dead after a mysterious fall from a hotel in India.

Sausage multi-millionaire Pavel Antov, from the main pro-Putin party, United Russia, had been on a holiday to celebrate his impending 66th birthday.

The father-of-one is the latest of a string of high-profile Russians, critical of Putin's invasion of Ukraine, to have met their death following a mysterious fall.

A male friend in Antov's party had died “from a heart attack” on Thursday last week, and the wealthy regional politician perished two days later.

Russia's isolation from global markets is

    withering its economy and

will wreck its status as an energy superpower

there are growing signs that deepening isolation will result in a withered economy for years to come, and a greatly diminished standing as an energy superpower.

It's had some success in sowing chaos via its weaponization of the energy trade, recently halting gas flows to Europe's key Nord Stream 1 pipeline while selling its leftover fuel supplies to customers like China and India.

Energy sales to those two countries netted Russia
over $24 billion in the first three months of the war alone.

Russia is set to pay a steep price for isolation in the long-run,

    a recipe for long-term stagnation,"

pointing to other isolated nations with the world's weakest economies, specifically North Korea, Afghanistan, and Cuba.

The country recorded $1.78 trillion GDP in 2021, down from $2.06 trillion seven years earlier.

    The International Monetary Fund estimates
GDP will fall another 6% this year.

Russia's payment ban on the "unfriendly" US dollar – which accounts for 88% of global foreign exchange transactions – is a huge barrier, allowing sellers to charge a premium and make imports more expensive.
