Tbh, his wife was still alive when he said that.
That’s an excellent point. I mean happened after Duncan left, but coach did also amend the TD promise to coach as long as Aldridge played there during that recruitment. Your point is relevant to current state.

I can’t even remember Bob Hill at this point. And I was an adult when he got canned. Just wondering what a Budenholzer, Udoka, Synder et all regime would be like.

Damn. The three-year, $14 million per year sounded pretty much settled the last I checked in. I wonder if they got him to commit to two more years by giving him $2 million extra per season. Or maybe there aren't as many opt outs.

Whatever the case may be, this is an awesome turn of events, IMO. The last thing we need as Spurs fans is for a coach to come and do what Jeff Van Gundy did in Houston -- run Yao into the ground chasing extra wins so he doesn't get fired.
I have not been a fan of some of the crazy x and o's stuff Pop has done the last several years post Kawhi but I did think at this moment of the time he is the right coach for Victor. Like you said he's established and wont' rush the development of Victor and throw him in the fire. He's going to be able to take losses without having to worry about getting fired which is necessary right now to develop Victor.

Sure should unless Doc scams his way into another gig or Spoelstra coaches till he himself is 70.

Pop should really move up the all time Ls too.
He was gonna surpass Doc anyways and now he's gonna chase down Jack Ramsey and George Karl will be next.

When all is said and done Pop my have the most Ws and Ls and be untouchable.

Myself? I only want more Legit Championships. Praying hound dog jpeg the Spurs can get very good, even great players ala GNob Parker Horry etc on the team.
Depending on the fan, there are no "Legit Championships".

Reporter: Pop why do you think they gave you so much money?
Pop: Well I tried my best to lose as many games as possible last year... so that must be it

    Must really love Wemby

Great news, tbh. No one I'd trust more to bring Wemby along at the proper speed. The last thing you want as an organization is a head coach who is feeling pressure to win ASAP that starts putting too much on Wemby's plate too soon.
Agree. It’s the best situation for Wemby and the Spurs organization. By the end of that 5 years, Wemby would be 24 yrs old and would have completely developed his game and body in time for the new head coach to take a safe transition to continue the winning ways, hopefully Manu if he then wishes to.

That is terribly ignorant thing to say. Especially to those who have watched loved ones pass to illness they couldn't beat. You are unable to do anything to help.

And nobody wants to be having others to watch them slowly pass.

    Great news.

Wembanyama is one of the best challenge possible for a coach like Pop. Wembanyama is talented, raw, atypical and wants to be coached. It's way more interesting for a coach than a plug and play vet player. There are a lot of work and thinking to do to make Wembanayama reach his upside.

Other Spurs' players being talented and agreeable to work with has surely also played his role. At 74 years old, I'm sure Pop doesn't want to be in constant conflict with his players and/or coaching an hopeless team.

I thought nephew broke him and everything that happened in following years was horrible.
From trading for DDR when it was obvious the roster shoudl've been blown up to all those disgusting Patty/Bryn/Marco lineup variations.

Still, he recovered and did an amazing tankjob last season, with the season before without DDR and LMA being decent.
Hopefully we see the real Pop back over the next few seasons.

It’s actually an opportunity for Coach Pop to cement himself as the GOAT. Not that he is not already one of the greatest. But having inherited a team with DRob and to add Timmy in that playoff team. Now Coach Pop has an opportunity to build a championship team from the ground up. Landing a biggest prospect ever helps, but still Wemby remains a prospect, and remains to be developed into his potential, to be the best basketball player of our time. This IS THE REAL Pop. He is a teacher foremost. He likes teaching the proper way of playing basketball, and he couldn’t be in a better position with our young squad. And to build a championship team from these kids who he helped picked, and now molding them to be their best as basketball potential is the real Pop. And if he could hopefully ring with these players in that 5 years time, I think it would say a lot as the greatest of all time coaches… not that he would even care about the distinction. But sincerely I think Pop just wants to make sure that this opportunity to right the team back to championship is done right, and he then could finally pass the helm to his successor.

I think there is zero chance he gets to the all time loss mark. I’m assuming that this is his last contract, and he’s sitting in 9th place currently, with 761 losses. The 5 year contract covers 410 games. The worst case scenario would be the same .268 tank win percentage as last year over the 5 seasons. That would be 300 losses, but would still leave him in 4th place, a couple of games short of Don Nelson. The middle ground scenario is .500 ball, 205 more losses. That would leave him with 966 losses, 5th place in the largest gap in the top 10, between Larry Brown and Motta. Now, let’s look at an average of 50 wins. It maybe optimistic, but hey,I examined the doomsday scenario, so let’s take a look at this. An average of fifty wins would mean 110 losses over the 5 years, leaving him with 871 losses, in 6th place between Gene Shue and Larry brown.

Even though I dont think he averages 50 wins, I do think its more likely than the doomsday scenario. I'd put the over/under at 220 wins over 5 seasons. Obviously lower average the first year then increasing per year thereafter.

Whatever makes him sleep at night
He should have stop coaching and took care of his wife before she passed
Are you saying that he neglected his wife and didn't look after her?

As to the topic of the thread, I am guessing Pop probably didn't plan to coach that much longer, but I really do think it's the defensive potential with Victor more so than the offense that has Pop excited to keep coaching. I think he's probably super excited to go back to trying to form a monstrous defensive team while also injecting it with the offense he tried to run towards the end of the TD era and Kawhi early Kawhi era. I'd say he probably also likes the younger players on the team. I think he could be rejuvenated with this group of young players the Spurs currently have.

Oh,sure, and I even said it was optimistic. The point of the exercise was to show that there was no real path to the all time loss mark if this contract is his last, and I believe it is.

I know he did not take time off except for one week once to help his wife
When she was sick . He had the money he did not need to keep working
he could have told the spurs he needed a 2 month 1 year break they would have gave it to him without hiring a head coach

Why didn't you look after your son instead of posting to Spurstalk?

You're a worthless piece of and a failure, and worst of all just a hopelessly stupid person who doesn't seem to realize how stupid he is. Go yourself.
