Victor, for all the hype, talent and potential.. is still clearly a rookie. The Spurs have done the right thing in not heaping any expectations such as reaching the playoffs or contention. We will have another season where reaching-the-potential and development (with some wins in the way) will be more important than any chance of contention. What is clearly going to be a slow process for Victor to figure out is positioning and affecting plays. It will take a while for him to get used to the rhythm, tempo and the geometry of the NBA game.
The team defense, I am not sure, will suddenly improve from last year's. It is quite clear that the Spurs rookies/ sop res are still quite lost on positioning and reading the plays on defense. Sochan didn't play so the Spurs will be better than what they showed yesterday but we can expect a long learning curve this year. Offensively, the Spurs look really good in the shooting and passing front, though and they should be really entertaining to watch. But after 2023-24, I expect the Spurs to be picking in the early lottery again next season.

I remember watching the Silver/Black scrimmage in the mid 90s at the Erwin Center. It was fun but it’s also just a scrimmage. Vinny Del Negro looked like an All NBA player hitting from everywhere, and we all know Vinny was just Vinny. Robinson was invisible because all the guards were taking the shots. The most important part was that it was cool to see our team early and it was free.
I'll just say that no one really jumped off the screen in the scrimmage, but it's just a scrimmage.
Wemby at the 4 is definitely the right decision this season
You got this all from a scrimmage??
I liked what I saw offensively, defense doesn't really happen in scrimmages. I look forward to tomorrow...and watching all the pre-season games this year!
fun to watch... Victor showed some really nice flashes of his passing and vision without really being force fed anything. He still needs to shake the overly fundamental box out thing he does when a shot goes up and just trust his size but that will come.
The shooters were hitting their shots which made for some fun back and forth. Zach is going to be the starting units stabilizing force as the season gets going. Knows when to shoot, drive, pass. Positions himself well defensively.
Was obviously not an all out effort on the defensive end but you can still see how Wemby's length, especially in the first half, made the silver group extremely hesitant to probe the paint. Gonna be a fun year.
It's funny watching Victor look backward for the box out when he can just go up and get it
George Hill always looked like Kobe Bryant in scrimmages ... it tells you nothing
I saw a lot of shooters who can hit the 3’s even our bigs and that should be useful with opening lanes, position-less and heavy ball movement that I think Pop will have them play a lot. It's a welcome change from 3-4 years ago when our squad was limited with who can hit the 3’s. Collins is going to be tough. You can see him relish those contacts. Poeltl was taller and more equipped, but didn’t really have the dawg in him, which was my frustration with him. You can’t say that on Collins. He will get in the mix and that would be contagious with our young core. With Wemby looming, he’s a step or two from help defense with his long reach.
I like that we have plenty of hoopers in the 2nd unit, Champagnie, Doug, Malaki, Graham and possibly Keldon. With Mamu and Bassey who can pass, it would be a deep bench.
I like that Vassell was shooting without hesitation. He will be special scoring, but time would tell if he can be as good as a defender. Pop is preaching better defense this year. Expect Pop to shorten the leash and yanking guys not doing their assignments. It’s still not set who will get minutes, so expect guys playing their heart out earning their spot.
The personnel hasn't changed that much. Defense is likely to still be horrendous.
personnel hasnt changed much....aside from the 7'4 dude who can defend in the paint and on the perimeter at our weakest position last year.
I question the logic there.
It’s always better to have continuity. It allows familiarity and progress. Spurs have 5 rings to show for it.
Just saw Killian Hayes highlights from preseason. Let’s make it a French trifecta. If the Spurs could somehow pull that off, that would be awesome. Wesley, Graham, future picks. They don’t have much leverage…
he was one of the worst players in the nba last season. Didn’t see him today though
Best part was Wemby's through the legs dunk in warmups tbh
I mean, do we think they just weren't trying at all on defense last year? I was assuming it was a talent issue.
How much could they realistically improve on D?
Wesley was one of the worst last season too. Make it 1 for 1 with a second rounder thrown in so the Pistons can act like they won the trade.
If we can make Dejounte a 20 and 6 guy, we can make Buhlockay a 20 and 6 guy.
I am not convinced we need to condemn Blake Wesley at all.
I think pop and co just implemented a basic defensive scheme and told the team to play at pace. The idea is fast is fun. May as well play fun while losing. I think this season scheme will be far more advance.
I have been wishing for Hayes for months now. He’d be good with this team.
They were trying, but Pop wasn't. Effort is only some of the equation. Pop would pull the good defenders late in the game, or outright sit them out.
Wesley was a rookie. Killian was a 3rd year player. You would hope as a fan or front office person in Detroit that there would be no comparison.
