Hate to break it to you but countries that don't trust each other do make agreements with each other.

They are of course the hardest ones to make but they are made.

Because agreements can be found based on mutual interests no matter how much anyone might want to believe otherwise.

They spent a huge amount of military resources and gained very little ground. I think that just before the counter-offensive Putin was more concerned about UKR's potential to take back territory and was more ready to negotiate. But Now Ukraine hasn't gained much, yet is more dependent than ever on even more support, not just to advance, but to hold back Russia's counter-attacks. And Putin probably sees cracks in Ukraine's political support... even if they may not fully exist yet but they will eventually.
Putin was absolutely NOT ready to negotiate. He has used this carrot multiple times in this conflict.

The US and others holding back on material has been part of the problem.
Very recently the long range missiles used made a huge impact, Russia is now much weaker in the south defending Crimea because they were stupid and counter attacked. If Ukraine controlled the air with F 16s like should have been offered we might be holding Ukraine back from taking or attacking Russian civilian centers. There are much more capable weapons that Ukraine has not been given. This is not a stalemate like WWI because there are much more effective weapon systems that have not been used.

Do you mean like Israel and Hamas? It's not just the hardest ones to make, they're not worth the paper they're written on as we see over and over again.

This isn't happening in a vacuum either when it comes to this Ukraine and Russia conflict. There were agreements made between them which Russia unilaterally broke.

So let's move past the pretense that Russia will keep their end of the bargain, unless they're in heavy duress and possibly Putler is long dead, and we can then talk about possible agreements.

So this is entirely based on your conjecture of what Putler was thinking, nothing on developments on the ground. Not every offensive will yield territory (though this counter-offensive did), but a show of resilience is just as important.

Don't get me wrong, your opinion is respectable, I just don't agree with it.

I could show you the men and material Russia has lost but you'll dismiss them as meaningless because you think Russia's military capacity and willingness to fight is limitless.

I mean they've stayed in Afghanistan for fifty years straight, right?

And Putin always keeps his end of every bargain he has ever made, right?

You're just painfully naïve because you favor perceived power above all else.

I don't like strongman dictators, but we better do what they want because they seem pretty tough and it may cause me vague and indirect discomfort to oppose them.

The goal of the counter-offensive is to reclaim territory.

Both sides have taken huge losses during the counter-offensive but the territory controlled by each side has changed little.

You know this and I know this. It's naïve to think otherwise.

Says you, the guy who views the Taliban takeover of the democratically elected Afghan government as an afterthought. How many thousands of posts have you spent calling for us to push them out again?

Not the only one, but I understand your simplistic point of view. It's just myopic like most of your thoughts here.

    Links please.

    You're just making up now.

The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan was a fait accompli that even your Trump knew would happen. Why do you think he left the Afghan government out of the "peace" negotiations?
