Wemby didn’t play spurs beat the suns and………..
So your argument is they were incredibly awful instead of historically bad? I mean, that's certainly a distinction to make. Not sure if it's the hill you die on. Offenses have improved but the spurs were still the worst in the L by a pretty notable margin.
Wemby didn’t play spurs beat the suns and………..
Here's a chart of league worst defenses, by Defensive Rating, going back 10 years.
SEASON AVG DRTG WORST TEAM WORST DRTG DIFF % DIFF 2014 106.7 MIL 111.8 5.1 4.8% 2015 105.6 MIN 112.2 6.6 6.3% 2016 106.4 LAL 111.6 5.2 4.9% 2017 108.8 LAL 113.0 4.2 3.9% 2018 108.6 PHO 112.8 4.2 3.9% 2019 110.4 CLE 117.6 7.2 6.5% 2020 110.6 WAS 115.5 4.9 4.4% 2021 112.3 SAC 117.2 4.9 4.4% 2022 112.0 POR 116.9 4.9 4.4% 2023 114.8 SAS 120.0 5.2 4.5%
Last year's Spurs were about on par with other league-worst defenses in the last decade. That 120.0 is the highest number on the list, which is where people get the "worst defense in NBA history" idea, but that leaves out the context of overall league-wide improvement in offensive efficiency.
OK so the Spurs were the worst defense last year and without Wemby they were significantly worse this year at 125.5 defensive rating without him until last night. Can't excuse that dropoff with any pace talk since the worst defensive ratings this year are Utah and Washington at 119.4.
So what's the takeaway here? We are trading Wemby? Think we can get a SRP for him?
Lol this thread getting to two pages
30% winning with Wemby
2014 worst defense would be 2024s best defense. Blows my mind
I'm not arguing with what you're saying. Yes, the Spurs' defense last year was league-worst and this year has been even worse when Wemby is off the floor. Needless to say, that will have to drastically improve for the Spurs to be compe ive.
What I'm pushing back against is the "historically bad" narrative. Last year's Spurs defense wasn't any worse relative to league average than, say, the 2016 Lakers.
Defensive Rating is already adjusted for pace, so pace isn't a consideration in these numbers.
rockets have gone on a tear with sengun out. that dude sucks.
this guy gets it
