Come out from behind that screen. You people got a lot to say until you have to do it in person.

130 pts, Pop must be proud
Winning record since Mitch took over, tbh.

Another reason for Spurs to go with Johnson, if Pop retires, is the fate of Spurs' assistant coaches (Brown, Nielsen and Johnson himself).

When a renowned coach comes to a team, he picks new assistant coaches. Former assistant coaches are waived. It isn't an issue because FO doesn't care about them and because they are viewed as co-responsible of the previous coach failure.

Spurs are in a different situation. These assistant coaches have been with the team for a long time, Spurs FO, which includes Pop, likely cares about them. They also obviously aren't responsible of the situation.

If Mitch is interim coach for most of the season and has the team in play-in contention by season's end, I don't see him not getting the full time gig tbh. He'll probably get a 3yr "prove it" deal or something. I'd imagine they'd also promote the Car Wash coach from last year's SL as well.

Another interesting wrinkle is CP3's presence. He's basically an on court coach. I wonder how his departure (either at the trade deadline or in the offseason) would impact the coaching structure or do they think about bringing him back again next season for one more year if his body holds up tbh.

I’m going to channel the spirit of TD 21 here and say that the head coach of a team doesn’t really dictate the wins and losses as much as people thinks it does. All a good coach does is MAYBE elevate a bad team into an average one. After that, it’s the talent of the top two or three players that take the team far into the playoffs.

Another sign of a good coach is keeping the egos in check. That’s it. Nothing spectacular about their contributions to wins and losses.
    I couldn't disagree more, tbh.
Cavs looked incompatible for two seasons, with two pairs of really similar players, everyone expected some moves to happen.
Atkinson comes in and they look like a completely different team from the first game.

Spoelstra made two finals with a roster that wouldn't get out of the first round with most coaches.

Obviously when you have MVP level players you don't need to micromanage stuff, but coaching still makes the biggest difference between good and great teams.

the first thing Johnson criticized after the game was the defense. Pop would’ve most likely lost that game by playing a bunch of non-shooters together and sticking to premeditated subs ution patterns

another thing to consider, if Mitch does the bolded part, then he’ll be a HC somewhere else if not here. That will be the kind of turnaround that will impress lots of teams.

We've already lost a lot of high quality assistant coaches while we've rolled with the senile old man dragging the team to the lottery year after year after year. Mitch is doing alright and seems to have the approval of the young team. They better not lose another high quality coach while hanging onto the hopefully soon to be fossil Pops

I’m not sure how the league feels about Will Hardy, but he was a coach who had a very rapid ascension from the Spurs ranks and Mitch could be viewed very similarly. I remember visiting the Spurs facility back when he was still a video assistant.

Spurs pedigree + an impressive interim coach stint will put him in very high demand.

I still want Becky… but I’m rapidly getting on the Mitch train.

He was runner up for the Wizards gig last summer. The guy they hired has connections with the new FO they brought in. Mitch may not have gotten a fair shake, but someone will give him one.

Would much rather have Mitch than a retread like a Mike Brown. The doomsday scenario would be bringing in Monty which I fear is a very realistic possibility considering he's back around the San Antonio area tbh.

I'm all for riding with Mitch but it's hard to know at this point how much he is actually coaching vs just trying to do what he thinks Pop wants. I mean pulling Vic within 5 mins of the first quarter every night has to be a Pop mandate. I'd like to see him do his own thing

Getting Vic in good spots, shooting more 3s, Challenging calls, etc. are all things that were lacking under Pop tbh. I think Mitch deserves a bit more credit.

Obviously want the old man to make a full recovery. But this terrible health issue doesn't mask the fact that he's been a bottom 5 coach for the last several years. I honestly think he was looking forward to yucking it up with the opposing coach after an L rmore rather than actually coaching his young team hard. He hasn't had that fire for a few years now. That's just natural when you get older.

This organization has needed an infusion of young blood thinking for a while now. I wish it was under better cir stances but it is what it is tbh.

Can you right wing bootlickers off and go jerk off together in the political forum? Y'all are so quick to rush to a thread and gloat about someone experiencing a serious health issue because they don't support your politics yet y'all turn into the biggest crybaby pussies in the world when someone criticizes your ideology. off already

Is he challenging more calls though? I remember one the other night (think it was against Utah?) where they called Castle out of bounds and he clearly wasn't and he didn't challenge it but chose to challenge a less obvious call a few mins later. I also dont know if Victor is getting into better spots so much as he has been hot from 3 lately tbh

He didn’t challenge the Castle call, and did challenge the Keldon foul, both of which were wrong decisions. I go with Sean when he says don’t listen to the players. Go with your replay video guy.

Wishing death to pop seems like a bannable offense to me. Relegate these people to the politics forum.

I understand this place is a free for all, but this seems like something every spurs fan can agree on. You can’t be a spurs fan and hate pop.
