WASHINGTON — U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a Tuesday speech that the ongoing tariffs showdown against China is unsustainable and he expects a “de-escalation” in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

But in a private speech in Washington for JPMorgan Chase, Bessent also cautioned that talks between the United States and China had yet to formally start. U.S. President Donald Trump placed import taxes of 145 per cent on China, which has countered with 125 per cent tariffs on U.S. goods. Trump has placed tariffs on several dozen countries, causing the stock market to stumble and interest rates to increase on U.S. debt as investors worry about slower economic growth and higher inflationary pressures.

In separate calls with the British and Austrian foreign ministers, China’s top diplomat has accused Washington of weaponising tariffs, and urged Europe to join hands with Beijing to defend the multilateral trading system.
Speaking to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Tuesday, Wang Yi said the United States had used tariffs “as a weapon to launch indiscriminate attacks on various countries”, violating World Trade Organization rules and harming the interests of other economies.

The practice “regresses state-to-state relations to the law of the jungle”, Wang said, adding that it was “a step backward in history, unpopular and unsustainable”, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.
