Spurs were never going all in on Kevin Durant. I also don’t believe the rumors that the Spurs are not interested. Of course any team is interested in Durant at the right price. I’m just spitballing but this is what I think happened:

Kevin Durant gave the Suns his list of preferred teams.

Suns called those teams. Said Durant wants to be with you. Here is what we want.

On the Spurs call they asked for #2 and Castle. Spurs hang up. Suns call back okay #2 or Castle. Spurs make a counter offer. Something like Vassell/Barnes 14 or maybe Keldon/Barnes/Branham/Wesley and 14. Suns say no and say it’s castle or #2 or no deal. Spurs hang up.

Spurs are no longer answering the Suns calls. They have moved on and will revisit it on draft day. If the Suns call. Otherwise business as usual.

if this is how it went down it would make sense the reports of the spurs not being “seriously interested”

Current vibe is it's down to San Antonio, Houston, or a team offering KD at least $60M x2 on top of his 54M this season.

Probability is weighted equally, roughly, but if somebody offers 120M, it's a wrap. I believe Spurs have submitted final offer outside a token or two, and Houston is on the clock deciding if they want to outbid the Spurs.

50 Mills, Demarre Carroll, making Vassell the highest paid Spur ever, picking up options a year early for Branham/Wesley etc etc
Man those are the weakest 'errors' in any franchise history. Lol

That wasn't a list of errors just recent examples of Spurs acting like a charity

The only reason for any team outside of the three to trade for Durant is if you think he gives you some chance at a le next year. Minny is the only team that I think that logic applies to but if Gobert & Divencenzo go out how good is that chance?

Over the years the Spurs were regularly used as the possible other landing spot for a player. , San Antonio was used as the other city when other franchises wanted a stadium for their team.

All Phoenix has is this posturing. Trying to get one of the three teams to improve their offer and I think hoping that Durant adds more teams in fear of going somewhere he really doesn’t want to go.

I’ll be really surprised if we don’t get him.

Miami is the one that makes less sense to me. Even ignoring any of the geographic/off-court stuff, I just really don’t see Miami being a threat in the East next year even with KD playing at the level he was at last year. Maybe I’m selling them short or underestimating how Spoelsta could utilize a player like KD, but just seems like their supporting cast is a clear step back from Houston/SA’s.

I guess the East is wide open enough to where anything could happen, but if his focus is being on the best team next year Miami is a clear 3rd behind the two Texas teams.
East is weak. Bam is a top 25-ish guy. herro just turned in a very strong season where he stayed healthy, produced with volume without sacrificing efficiency. and spo is still a great coach

Yeah, I think Miami makes a good amount of sense, and as I've said parting with Ware is no big issue to me. Rocket make a lot of sense because they need a focal point shooter and their offense is already one-note and based on iso shot-chucking.

San Antonio doesn't totally make sense, sort of gilding the lily and with Harper coming in there's a question of shots going around.

    Bam
    KD
    Highsmith/Jaquez or Jovic
    Herro
    Mitc

That is probably good for 50 wins in a weak East.

Another positive it’s another team that will be better than the Hawks.

Hawks could easily be the fourth worst team in the East next season after Wiz, Charlotte, Brooklyn.

Philly should improve, as should Toronto, Chicago with a full season of Giddey is probably a tossup with Atlanta.

Agree generally but Atlanta should be top 6 and free from the play-ins. The East is going to be so bad, even with an improving Detroit, etc.

I mean just looking at it very simply: they were just the #2 seed and most of their core should be better next year (Amen, Sengun, Jabari). Swapping out Jalen Green for KD is a pretty major upgrade for them. Good coach in Ime + would land him in Texas which seems like something he wants.

I’m biased so obviously I think SA gives him a better chance of contending next year + also gets him back to Texas (and closer to Austin, presumably where he’d like to be). But I can see why Houston makes sense.
Th difference between #2 and #8 was four games. They were just younger and healthier.

Exactly, the suns have absolutely no leverage. He's good, but he's old and he's expensive so what is the point to give up anything of real value?

Had kind of been getting those vibes since the Athletic article + the way this all started a couple weeks ago. Do you have a link to the Amick quote you’re referring to?

Yea he wants SA. His agent is likely asking them to do right by KD and trade him to SA which is why they're demanding Castle or the #2 Pick in return despite it being unrealistic, but we're not budging and they're growing increasingly frustrated and looking elsewhere. PHX has absolutely no leverage here though. I don't envy their position at all tbh.

The Spurs package isn’t that bad. Vassell a proven NBA rotation player, an expiring contract you can trade during the season, and #14 in a deep draft. If they want a haul they need to be trading booker.

Ready for this to be all over regardless.

"The Spurs are the favorites to land Durant."
    "Oh wait they're not."
"The question is "will he wear #35 in San Antonio?""
"but wait he might go to the TWolves."
"He doesn't want the T-Wolves, he wants the Spurs."

At this point I’m really curious what we’ve actually offered. I wonder if Wright has tried just lowballing the out of them so that at the end he can go, “Fine, we’ll do Vassell/Keldon/14” and make it seem like a big improvement

Damn, a top 30 player/top 5-8 PG forced his way to the Spurs just months ago. And now KD (yeah I get he's old but he's still KD and his numbers are still that) is out and about blocking all deals that aren't Spurs related.
