The removal of flags commemorating fallen Danish veterans who fought in Afghanistan by staff at the United States embassy in the country’s capital has caused a public outcry.


The move came ahead of a silent march that will take place here on Jan. 31 to pay respect and show solidarity to the veterans following remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, which discredited the role NATO allied troops played during the war.


In a recent interview with Fox News, the president claimed that while allies sent soldiers to help U.S. troops, they “stayed a little back and a little off the frontlines.” Trump added that the U.S. “never really needed them” in the conflict.


The comments sparked a significant wave of anger among Danish leaders and veterans, who stated that such remarks were disrespectful and insulting to the sacrifices made by Danish troops and those of other countries.
After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Washington invoked NATO’s Article 5 for the first and only time in history. Canada and France establish diplomatic presence in Greenland amid Trump threats

Greenlanders are about to receive some crucial diplomatic support from Canada and France in the island’s continuing battle with Donald Trump.

Governor-General Mary Simon will be in Nuuk on Friday to open a consulate in the capital. A Canadian Coast Guard ship, the Jean Goodwill, will be on hand for the ceremony. And French officials are expected to open a consulate on Thursday.

Canada and France are among the first countries to establish diplomatic missions in Greenland in the wake of the U.S. President’s threats to acquire the Arctic island, which is a self-governing part of Denmark. Canada’s pledge to set up a consulate was made in late 2024 as part of a review of Arctic foreign policy, but the proposal took on added importance in recent months as Mr. Trump ratcheted up his rhetoric.

Danish military assists sick US seaman

The Danish Defense Joint Arctic Command assisted the US Navy with the emergency evacuation of a sailor from the USN Seawolf SSN 21 nuclear-powered fast attack submarine off the coast of Greenland.

Arctic Command reported that the submarine surfaced 7 nautical miles from Greenland’s capital of Nuuk, requesting assistance due to a medical emergency. “The crew member required urgent medical treatment and has been transferred to the Greenlandic health authorities and the hospital in Nuuk,” a Danish Defense spokesperson said.

It is extremely unusual for a nuclear-powered submarine to break mission and surface. The Seawolf-class boats are among the most technologically advanced submarines in the world. They are ultra-quiet and can remain submerged for 80 days, with the only limitation being supplies for the crew. They have a published test depth of 490 meters (1,600 feet) and their maximum silent-running speed is 37 kph (23 mph). The Seawolf has a crew of 14 officers and 126 enlisted personnel and is frequently used for classified intelligence-gathering missions.

US Navy submarines do not have a ship’s doctor. Medical services are provided by a senior enlisted independent duty corpsman with capabilities similar to a civilian critical care paramedic.

Greenland doesn't want the hospital ship either

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Sunday "no thanks" to U.S. President Donald Trump's idea of sending a hospital ship to Greenland, a territory that Trump has repeatedly said he wishes to take over.


Trump said on Saturday on social media he was working with Louisiana Governor and special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, to send a hospital boat to Greenland.

Direct U.S. designs on owning Greenland faded since the mid-20th century, when Denmark became a U.S. partner in the NATO alliance and military access to the island was secured.


But Tom Dans, the Trump-appointed director of the United States Arctic Research Commission, has a much stranger pitch for why the U.S. needs control of Greenland.
