YEAH BUT THEY MIGHT HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR THAT
same reason folks dislike M4A even though everyone would save money on healthcare -- poor people might get medical treatment they don't deserve

    DHS is robbing deportees

Dozens of deportees are arriving in the Haitian city of Cap Haitien weekly as the Trump administration pushes to remove Haitians who lack legal immigration status in the United States, and some are now marooned in an unfamiliar place.

More than 80 people were returned last week, often with only the U.S. government-issued sweatpants and T-shirts, and with immigration court do ents stuffed in their pockets. Many returned broke, saying their valuables had disappeared during the trip and they now lacked the cash to get home.

Forced feeding is torture, and yes, I called it that here when Obama did it.

Not sure he cut any holes into people's abdomens...

But in this latest case in Texas, ICE also received permission to force-feed the Cuban hunger striker through a “percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy” tube insertion. This is a surgery in which medical staff make an incision in a person’s abdomen, insert a tube that remains in place indefinitely until it is surgically removed again and pump liquid directly into the stomach. This procedure has not been previously identified in other force-feeding cases reviewed by the Guardian.

“The cruelty of the extreme tactics at ICE’s disposal to end lawful protest, including forcibly cutting into a protester’s body to insert a tube in their stomach, underscores the horrors happening outside our view in ICE detention centers,” said Savannah Kumar, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas. “ICE’s brutal use of involuntary medical procedures on hunger strikers demonstrates how degrading conditions have gotten in these hidden places, which is often exactly what hunger strikers are protesting in the first place.”t ere wBut in this latest case in Texas, ICE also received permission to force-feed the Cuban hunger striker through a “percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy” tube insertion. In the wake of a hiring surge last summer, an official in charge of evaluating new recruits to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a dire warning.
    […]
Citing an “unprecedented lowering of standards,” the career ICE official said that “systemic breakdowns” had allowed applicants to receive job offers before they had passed basic fingerprint, iden y or credit checks in a preliminary vetting process.

For an administrationthat clearly desires a “papers please” standard to be applied across the United States and directs the actions of the agency now expected to handle most of this “papers please” work, it’s almost hilarious to discover ICE applicants are getting job offers before their iden ies have been verified. That means it might be easier for an undo ented migrant to secure a job at ICE than one at the local food jobber.

This is happening while Trump and his MAGA cohorts are demanding everyone produce proof of citizenship before being allowed to vote. Meanwhile, ICE doesn’t even know if the person it’s trying to hire is actually the person the applicant says they are.

This isn’t just some rando speaking off the record. The New York Times has secured a copy of the whistleblower report submitted to the DHS Inspector General and spoken to the whistleblower directly:

The whistle-blower, a 17-year ICE veteran who spoke to The New York Times on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of his claims, said the agency had cut corners in its rush to fill the ranks.

“We chose as an agency to be more convenient rather than thorough,” he said, describing the agency’s decision to reduce scrutiny of recruits in order to expedite hires. “By doing so, there was a potential to put lives at risk and to jeopardize national security.”

striking economic damage, no social benefit

A new study shows that the widespread fear and isolation caused by the immigration crackdowns that began in early 2025 had a significant economic toll on Chicago commerce, draining over $1.26 billion from local businesses.

The report, published by the University of Illinois Chicago, used anonymous cellphone GPS data to track movement between immigrant and non-immigrant neighborhoods throughout Chicago's Cook County. Researchers found that the routine back-and-forth between these areas collapsed almost immediately after President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, 2025, amid rampant rumors and the subsequent sweeps that Chicago would be targeted for immediate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Professor Matt Wilson, a co-author of the study, noted how strongly the economic ripples were felt outside of immigrant communities in the area. The report estimates that decreased consumer mobility cost retail shops and restaurants in non-immigrant neighborhoods roughly $1.26 billion, while costing the state of Illinois an estimated $107 million in lost tax revenue.

Immigration violations are overwhelmingly civil, not criminal

ICE acts like it has a license to impose cruel and unusual punishment for noncriminal violations

The baby btw is a ing US citizen

4th Cir. holds that shackling a pregnant inmate during labor and immediately post-partum, without penological justification, violates the Eighth Amendment AND this is such common sense prison officials should have known.

lie to courts, lose your credibility

[A]fter repeated misrepresentations by ICE officers, both to this Court and others, the inherent trustworthiness of Form I-213s and other like do ents is, at best, on perilous footing. ...
As a result, this Court is under the disheartening impression that, at best, ICE takes cursory steps to ensure that its statements are truthful, and, at worst, has a culture of outright lying to further its litigation positions. In view of the litany of deception and outright falsehoods that have infected ICE's representations to this court and others, this Court finds itself in the unenviable position of stating that uncorroborated Form I-213s are worth considerably less than uncorroborated police reports, which are, themselves, not en led to substantial weight.

    warrantless workplace sweeps

“There were no arrest warrants,” said Perry Grossman, a supervising attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit with the Worker Justice Center of New York.

“There was no su ion that individual workers had committed crimes. And they seized easily 100 people for nonconsensual questioning. They arrested 57. Out of those 57 people, criminal charges were brought against only five. And the most serious charge was unlawful reentry.”

Grossman said one employee got her charges dismissed after contending in a lawsuit that her Fourth Amendment rights were violated. He said he was not aware of any charges or indictments against the employers.

Torture, forced disappearances, denial of sanitary food and water, denial of healthcare and recreation, detention beyond two days, etc.

DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards.

The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.

reporting on "The Box" suggested that it may have been much worse. The OIG saw "The Box" as of January 2026. Interviews done with people detained in September 2025 said at the time that "The Box" was smaller, people were chained in it, and it wasn't covered.

these agents should be arrested and prosecuted, period

it is not illegal to film government agents working in public

Two U.S. citizen teenagers who were on their way to file enlistment papers to join the Marines were violently attacked by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who reportedly detained them for nearly eight hours before letting them go.

Telemundo reports that agents pepper-sprayed the teenagers because they were allegedly filming ICE arresting parents outside of Santos Livas Elementary School in Alamo, Texas. ICE agents were caught on video pulling one teen from the car and punching him repeatedly in the face while he lay on the ground. The other teen, Luis Ochoa, said he informed the ICE agents he was a citizen but was told, “I don’t give a damn.… Your parents can’t help you now.”

Ochoa is reportedly rethinking his decision to enlist, with his mother telling Telemundo, “How are they supposed to serve a country that doesn’t even uphold their basic rights?”

ICE denied pregnant mothers medical care and lost track of miscarriages

ICE is arresting a record number of pregnant women and teenagers – placing them in detention centers where they say it can be exceedingly difficult to access medical care. At the same time, the agency appears to have lost count of how many suffered a miscarriage.Government do ents obtained by the Guardian show that the Trump administration placed more pregnant immigrants in detention last fall and winter than at any time over the previous year.

ICE recorded 18 miscarriages during the first nine months of the Trump administration, the do ents show, but the agency has no data on miscarriages after 3 October 2025.

Meanwhile, detained pregnant women report that they are struggling to access routine and emergency medical care. In interviews with the Guardian and in testimonies shared by their attorneys, women who miscarried or were hospitalized for pregnancy complications said they did not receive follow-up care, despite experiencing ongoing pain and symptoms.

Anabell, 35, said she didn’t know she was pregnant until she was arrested and told to take a pregnancy test during a medical examination at the Campbell county detention center in Kentucky. A month later, she started bleeding heavily – soaking through a new menstrual pad every 30 minutes. Chained to a hospital bed at a local ER, she was told she wasn’t pregnant anymore.

Laura, 21, was in the second trimester of a high-risk pregnancy when she was sent to the Dilley detention center in Texas. Now, still detained and approaching her third trimester, she’s experiencing persistent abdominal pain and bleeding – and says she hasn’t been allowed to see an OB-GYN.

Angie, 26, learned she was pregnant a few weeks after she was booked into the Mesa Verde detention center in California. A few weeks after that, she woke up to large amounts of brown fluid excreting from her body. The medical staff at the detention center told her the miscarriage wasn’t her fault, she said.
