    What's up with Cedric Benson?

    Why isn't he playing?

    Is he hurt?

    Shoulder

Benson might be able to take part in contact drills to get ready for Week 1, but he is an extremely risky play for the start of the regular season. Thomas Jones unofficially sits atop the depth chart in Chicago, but Benson still has plenty of time to establish himself as the starter if he can get and stay healthy.

I have heard from someone with the team that he just doesn't want to play. He is a typical Texas HS star - burnt out on football already. They haven't given up on him yet (because they need a backup for Jones), but he is on his last go round.

Interesting point on being burnt out on football as another Texas HS Star... anyone remember Jerrod Douglas? He basically retired after college for the same reason.

I went to high school with him, he was our offense at that time. He kind of fizzled out at Baylor. I always thought he would be too small to make it big. Chris Pryor was another one.

Cedric never got hurt in college but has seemed to get injured in the pros. He has always been a shady character and I'm surprised Mac was able to reel him in as much as he was at Texas. Hopefully not another Maurice Clarett.

Douglas was incredible in HS and he had his moments at Baylor. I recall watching him play a couple of times.

Chris Pryor was supposed to be the next Earl Campbell. He is San Antonio's version of Boobie Miles but without the knee injury.

Anybody remember that incredible '87 Holmes team? Wilbur Odom, Kenneth Lampkin, the Cash twins, and Johnny Walker on the same offense were the high school version of the Indianapolis Colts. They didn't win state but of all the high school teams I saw play, they stand out.

I'm not positive, but I don't think he got any interest from the pros due to his size.

Great team I saw them play Judson at Alamo Stadium. Walker was awesome.

I heard from other football players that Wilbur Odom had a chance to go to Texas. He signed with Michigan and never saw the playing field. Too bad he didn't follow his receivers to Texas.

yeah, plus he was named starter in training camp over Jones because Jones wasnt practicing, I guess a lot of bears didnt care for it...also i read an interview with benson like more than a year ago and he said that him and nate vashner werent even friends in college and he wasnt sure if they would hang out or talk a lot...ROFL Benson has to be a ruthless dude, he would be an asshole if he wasnt one of the greatest running backs in college football history

naturally Bears should try to get along for the good of the team, and im sure its just a few chodes who narced on him to the coaches, and who actually care about benson enough to hate him, pro football is weak as right now and the bears dominated last year with a 3rd team qb and Benson on the sidelines

What history have YOU been watching???? He never made any noise in the Heisman, even as the starting back for 3 years on an elite team. I can think of a dozen backs I would place above Benson, and that's just in my time.

That's what a great defense will allow you to do. Probably why everyone wants one.

I liked Benson and he was a tough, durable back for us - but he lacked the break away speed and big play ability to make any noise. His yards were hard earned between the tackles for the most part, and that just doesn't get Reggie Bush like headlines.

There was an article on him a few years ago in the Express News where he said (granted, it was his word) that he had a lot of interest from pro teams, but didn't want to play anymore. He didn't even enter the draft, at least thats what the article said, FWIW.
