    Gasol Gone?

Huge day of football on Saturday. And we have to admit, it’s a little weird when a Syracuse/Illinois matchup isn’t a Game of the Day-type event, but rather a pairing of probably the two worst major-conference teams in the country … If Grizzlies fans weren’t worried enough about Pau Gasol missing 3-4 months with a broken foot, they have to be concerned with what Gasol said in the Spanish newspaper El Pais: “I would like to be in a position to fight for a le. And that’s not happening in Memphis. If we don’t improve, a change is possible,” Pau said. Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a trade demand, and Gasol is under contract until 2010-11, but you never like to hear your franchise player say stuff like that. Then again, all the Grizz need to do is win one playoff game and they can say they’re improving … Gasol also talked about winning the World Championship and the reaction he gets from other NBA players. “They (American players) have their culture, their pro leagues. They have congratulated me for winning the World Championships, but in fact they don’t care about it,” Pau said. Are we crazy or does that sound like a chip on Pau’s shoulder? … The U.S. women’s team dispatched of Cuba, 90-50, at the World Championships in Brazil. Candace Parker led Team USA with 16 points, nine boards and two blocks (she is going to wreck the WNBA when she gets there), and Diana Taurasi and Tina Thompson dropped 13 points apiece … Chris Paul brought in LeBron, D-Wade and Dwight Howard, among others, for his charity bowling tournament this weekend … The Heat picked up their team options on Wayne Simien and Dorrell Wright, keeping them inked for the next two years … We were looking at a list of the NBA’s top salaries for the upcoming season, and found some interesting stuff. For example, did you know Chris Webber and Allan Houston are tied for the le of the second highest-paid player in the League? C-Webb and H20 will pull down $20 million apiece next season. Actually, the Knicks have four guys slated to make $15 million-plus next year – Houston, Steph, Jalen Rose and Stevie Franchise. And did you know that Brian Grant and Eddie Jones both crack the Top 20 of the highest-paid players? Finally, do you know which player the Mavericks will be paying the most money to next year? Michael Finley. Dallas is still on the hook for $17 million owed to Finley in ’06-07 … The AND 1 Mix Tape Tour has been in Puerto Rico this week, and our man Andre “Silk” Poole is keeping a diary of the whole experience. Click here for Day One, and click here to read about Day Two … We’re out like H20 …
